Bad Judgement From Ref at Big Game

Hello Badlandz, I would personally like to make a complaint about the Big Game, Battle For The Planet. On March 24th 2013, I took my 11 year old brother to his first big game. We were playing on the American Marines side with red armbands. The opposing team had a "Drop Ship" and the pilot repetitively shot at my younger brother's head point blank. he chased my brother around a tree asking for his surrender, but kept shooting at the same time. of course if paintballs are hitting your head constantly at point blank then your going to cover your head. They said my brother didn't surrender...even though they fired first. I don't blame the player for this, i blame the ref that accompanied them. The ref watched the whole incident and when we told them that wasn't right. the ref bluntly said, "GO BACK TO YOUR BASE!". The ref was clearly not ensuring safety and was only bias for his white arm band team's victory. My brother has welts on his head that could've been avoided if the ref just stepped in to stop the unnecessary bonus ball at point blank. The ref accompanied the white armband team and wore dye i4's.

Sorry that something like that happened to your brother but it was`nt a ref if he had white armband tape on , he was another player. For this game we hired MW Arson and we have received dozens of compliments so far and only this one issue. We have Beginner open play running along side all our big games as well as each weekend, please bring your brother back out as our guest so we can insure he has a great time and learns to enjoy the game at a slower pace with other younger and newer competitors. We will cover his entry as well as paint and a rental gear if he needs it. Again sorry this happened, please give us the opportunity to make it right

Yep sorry to hear about your lil bro. As was stated a few posts above if the player had tape on I doubt he was a ref. Most to all the ref's wear Orange and white Ref jerseys .

I think the post from the field owner above shows just how great the place is and how willing he is to make it an enjoyable experience for all ages. If you or your brother are ever out and you see myself or my team feel free to give us a shout and we will make sure you guys have a good time as well.

Have a good one!

Great response from the field......

Although, what kind of big brother watches that happen to his little brother?

Just saying.

I was just shocked at how the ref was standing there allowing this to happen. As I did say in my original post, I told the players and ref that it was wrong for them to do that to a kid. The ref just bluntly said "GO BACK TO YOUR BASE!". The ref was wearing an orange stripe referee jersey and was not wearing a white armband but I made the conclusion that he was in favor of the other side since he accompanied them on the "drop ship".

If that is the case then I think anyone will agree that was a bad call but could not have been intentional. I know when reffing there is a ton of stuff going on and you can't catch everything and unless he blatantly saw what happened he could have just said go back to your base because at least that gets you out of harms way and he still needs to keep his eye on the field.

BUT with that said its still a bad call and an unfortunate thing that your little brother had to deal with. Like the owner of the field has said in a few posts up, bring him back and in beginners open play and let Badlandz make it right.

My name is Liam Norris and I was the coordinator for this Big Game. I'm not sure what happened w/ your little brother but I know that refs have a lot to keep their eyes on at any given moment, especially when there are special rules in play. I felt MW Arson did a great job. I had overwhelmningly possitive feedback from the players. As far as your percived ref bias goes I have to disagree. I MADE a ref accompany each drop ship on both sides everytime one was in play.
I'm very sorry that you had a bad experience but I'm very proud that my homefield is doing what it can to make it right. My goal as a game coordinator is to try to make the Big Games as much fun as possible for ALL the players. I hope you give Badlandz a second chance and find out what a fantastic place to play paintball it really is.

The big game overall was a fun time, but that one incident was pretty upsetting. The ref didn't even approach my little brother to apologize or explained what just happened. I am taking him out again tomorrow for open play beginners at the badlandz. The guy above said something about free entry and what not, but he hasn't told me contacted me personally to get information. So as expected, its all talk and no walk. I would personally just like the ref to apologize to my younger brother.

as I was also on the Marine side, and I was at our base when the white did a a drop inside our base, I have seen many drops in games this was the first one, I ever seen using a gunner, which I thought was a good idea.

In many other games I have attended that used helicopter drops without the aid of a gunner, is usually a slaughter for those who get dropped, because as it was stated, you are not allowed to follow the helicopter, but overly aggresive players are always looking for that next "kill" follow the helicopter even when they are told not to

The gunner assures that those getting "dropped" have a slim chance for making there mission successfull.

I am sure your younger brother being his first Scenario had no knowledge of what is involved in these "drops" I was reinserting at our base when the white side was doing a helicopter in our base, and those players on that drop had about 3 seconds before they were lit up, it takes a real player to take on that risk, knowing you are going to get lit up, that's taking one for the Team.

The Base Ref should have step in and removed your younger brother from harms way, but they are also watching for those overly aggressive players also, I thought they refs were outstanding.

this is a unfortunate situation that does happen in Scenario games, I do hope that your brother is okay, and takes the Badlandz up on there most genorous offer to make it right.

it is just as unfortunate as my son got shot in the neck, on a dead mans walk from a player from 20ft away that broke skin, and bled pretty bad, and yes his gun was up, barrell sock on, was it a accident or one of those overly aggressive players.

I would like to belive it was just a accident, and part of the game, I hope it was not from a player looking to inflict harm on another player, and yes unfortunately every scenario has a few those players looking to do just that

I hope your brother recovers, and you bring him to some more events, there is a learning exsperience to take from every game you attend, unfortunately some lessons really hurt in Scenario Paintball

My incident did not happen at our base. We were deep in middle of the woods playing. I dont believe my brother was also following the drop ship to get kills because he was pretty intimidated to play aggressively like that. My brother was crouching behind a tree barricaded with branches. The dropship walks around the tree and starts shooting his pump at my brother. my brother tries to put his gun up, but the gunner kept shooting at his head and asking him to surrender at the same time. He chased my brother for a bit too while my brother was trying to protect his head. The ref that each drop ship is assigned to was watching and allowed everything to take place. He did not explained to us what was going or nor did he apologized for what just happened. I believe the gunner was the aggressor here even though their job was to drop their people into strategic points. My brother was so unaware of what was happening and so confused after everything was done. Like I said earlier, I don't blame the players because the ref has to ensure safety procedures.

I am also sorry to hear that about your son, a lot of dead man walking do happen to get shot at by other players who are confused but its okay as long as they realize their mistake and apologize. I'm taking my brother out today and yet badlandz or whoever has yet to contact me with any info about "making it right".

now that's just wrong, on many levels, my apologies, I thought he was at the Marine base at the time of his very unfortunate incident. As you seem to be a very seasoned player, and very knowledable of the game.

I hope his next exsperience, turns out better, when you take him out for his next outing

You pm'd a nice thank you but we have no way of knowing who you or your brother are if I you don't provide us with your names so we can put them in our data base. Please don't make the erroneous assumption we will be " all talk and no walk" as you say. Feel free to call or pm again, you're welcome to email thru our web site, if you prefer, but we did reach out to you with an apology and an offer that is valid and very public, so simply let us know who you are and the next time you're coming out. If you did play this past Saturday, you should have let us know when you arrived so your brother was comp'd.
Thanks again

This is why I haven't gone to badlands other playerS have told me if I'm not in a team I rather stay away because they are very competitive and don't play with people that aren't in teams. I'm talking about speedball.
