***DM/Proto Eyes (troubleshoot/faq/info)***
WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY EYES
Troobleshooting checklist (LED colors based on stock board) :- With air off, turn on gun with nothing (NO ball) in the breech.
It should boot to RED.- If it boots to GREEN with nothing (NO ball) in breech, check the following:
- Eyes are not connected to the board properly. Check connection. If you have a PM5/6 eye ribbon, check to see if the ribbon is connected to the board with the silver side up or facing you.
- Eyes are damaged (wires pinched, eye ribbon ripped/pinched/creased). Buy new eyes.
- Eyes are not aligned. Remove Eye covers to see if eyes are aligned.
- Eyes are dirty. Clean the eyes.
- Change battery
- Chech dip switches. Configuration mode (dip 2 = up) will boot to Green.
- If it boots to BLINKING RED with nothing (NO ball) ball in breech, check the following:
- BLINKING RED means eyes are off. Check to see if the board is pressed against Eye button where it always on. Adjust your board so the Eye button is not actuating the eye button on board. If adjusting the board doesn't help, you can bend the eye button on the board back... but be very careful.
- After booting to RED (no ball in breech), stick your finger in the breech.
The LED color should turn GREEN (ball in breech). - Click trigger and the LED color should start BLINKING GREEN (eye failure).
- With air OFF, this is normal since your freakin finger is still in the breech, and the eyes are still blocked.
- With air ON with paintballs, please check the following:
- Eyes are blocked or eyes are dirty. Check the breech and/or clean your eyes.
- The marker is not gassed up. Check on/off if it is on. Turn your on/off or airport off and check to see if you tank is screwed in all the way. Check your Hyper2 setting. Check if there is air blockage in your Hyper2.
- There is bad connection between the board and the eye’s or the battery is low. Check connection and change battery.
- With Eyes BLINKING GREEN (eye failure), take your finger out of the breech.
The LED color should now turn RED (no ball in breech).- If it is still BLINKING GREEN, go back to checklist number 3a and 3b.
- If LED is RED, put your finger back in the breech.
The LED should turn GREEN again.
ADDITIONAL EYE ISSUES and FAQ’s
PMR and PM7 UL frame eye issues - Eyes are connected and not damaged, but it boots to GREEN after closing my grips.
My gun seems to shoot faster with eyes off than with eyes on. Why?
or
Why is my gun capped at 10bps and BLINKING GREEN? - First of all, are you shooting with NO air and something in the breech?
If yes, you are most likely shooting with something (finger, barrel swab, etc.) in the breech. With something the breech the gun will drop down to 10bps so this is normal.
Explanation:
If you notice when you turn on the gun, it boots to RED (no ball in breech). When you put something in the breech, the LED turns GREEN (ball in breech). When you click the trigger it BLINKS GREEN (Eye failure). When Eye failure occurs, it goes into safe mode where it will drop the BPS to 10bps. If in a game, and you chop a ball and eyes get blocked (Eye failure), it drops down to 10bps to prevent anymore chop. In summary, it is normal to shoot 10bps with something stationary in the breech. It will shoot faster if you are shooting paint. - Second, are you shooting with air and paint, but it is still slow?
First thing to do is clean your eyes... or run through the "Troubleshooting Checklist" above. If they are clean and still shooting slow, then it is either... you have slow fingers, or your hopper is not feeding fast enough for eyes to register the next ball to shoot. The hopper can also limit how fast you can shoot, so don't be so fast to blame the eyes. Change the battery on your hopper and checking your settings (force feed)... or use a friends/teammates hopper to see if you get the same results. Let someone else try your hopper to see if they get the same results. Use process of elimination. Also, another thing you can try is change your detents. It is possible that your detents are not positioning the balls where the eyes can see them. - Check your ROF (bps) setting.
- If you have a VLocity, there is a known ghosting issue (earlier releases) where guns shoot below 15 bps even at the highest setting.
Additional Troubleshooting tips - Before installing your eyes, you can plug it into the board and test the eyes with out installing them by facing the eyes toward each other. If it works, continue with installation.
- You can look down the breech to see if eyes are working with a camera phone.
LOW BATTERY INDICATOR:
PM5/6 stock board = BLINKING ORANGE
DM5/6/7 and stock UL frame boards = BLINKING BLUE

DM/Proto Eye FAQ's (cont)
DM eyes FAQ's - The Generation 1 DM6 Eyes had alignment issues which was causing chopping.
- Fix was is to put a small 007 o-ring on the eyes with the eye covers holding it in place.
- Why is my front bolt o-ring getting Torn up? The acrylic eye inserts used for the Self-Cleaning eyes, sometimes extends to far in the breech. When the front o-ring slide over the acrylic eye inserts, it tears up the o-ring.
- Fix is to call DYE (1-858-536-5183) to replace the problematic acrylic eye inserts.
- How can I tell the difference from a Generation 1 and a Generation 2 DM6.
- If you take off the eye covers and see milling where the o-ring sits over the eyes, then it is a Generation 2 DM6.
- Can I change my DM6 eyes to DM5 eyes?
- How do the Self-Cleaning eyes work?
- Basically the Bolt tip o-ring wipes the eyes clean. When the bolt tip O-ring passes these acrylic pieces(DM6) or clear polycarbonate cylinder(DM7) , it sweeps off any dirt, grease or paint
that could be blocking the eyes.
- Are the DM7 and DM8 eyes the same as the DM6?
- No. The DM7/DM8 self-cleaning eyes were redesigned. Instead of the acrylic eye inserts used on each eye in the DM6, the DM7 uses a clear polycarbonate cylinder piece mounted inside the breech of the gun covering the eyes. This resolves and alignment issues that the acrylic eye inserts had. Also, the DM7 went back to the DM4/5/C style eyes. Now DM7 users can get aftermarket laser eyes and not lose the Self-Cleaning eyes functionality.
DM6 (left) DM7 (right)
- What are factory compatible eyes for all DM guns?
- DM4/5/C/7/8 use the same eyes. The DM6 has it's own style eyes, which are flat to work with the Self-Cleaning acrylic eye inserts. Since DM6 has their own set of eyes, if you want aftermarket laser eyes, you will have to sacrifice the self-cleaning eyes functionality.
Proto eyes FAQ's - What’s the difference between Proto and DM eyes.
- Proto eyes are eye ribbon material, and DM eyes are made with wires. The ribbon is a lot thinner and easy to fit in tight spaces like the sides of the solenoid. The disadvantage is that the ribbon material is not as durable as wires and can be easily damaged.
- Can I put DM style wired eyes in my Proto?
- It is possible to do this with an Aftermarket board. More on this in the Aftermarket eyes section below.
- Is it possible to put Self-Cleaning eyes in my Proto.
- No. Not possible so don’t think about it.
- If I accidentally ripped/damaged my eye ribbon, is there a way to fix them?
- No. You would need to get a new pair.
- Are all Proto eyes the same?
- No. PM5 and PM6 eyes are the same… but different than the PM7 and PMR eyes. PM7 and PMR eyes are different in shape, so they are NOT interchangeable. Therefore, the PM7 has its own eyes, and the PMR has its own eyes.
Additional Info: The PM5 and PM6 have 3 wire ribbons, and the PM7 and PMR have 4 wire ribbons.
PM5/6 (left) PMR and PM7 (right)
Where can I get factory replacement eyes? - Call DYE (1-858-536-5183) if gun is under warranty. Call anyway... you might be lucky and get a freebie if you are nice on the phone.
- Google search... few places that I know care Factory eyes are pbwarehouse.net, compulsivepaintball.com, bradyspaintball.com, AV, etc.
- Try Pbnation B/S/T and WTB forums if you don't want to buy them MSRP ($40)
TIP for PM5/6 owners:
Factory eyes are around $40. For around $10 more... get the PM6 medium parts kit. It comes with 2 sets of eyes, o-rings, and other items you can use for your Proto. I know AV and compulsivepaintball.com usually carry the PM6 medium parts kit.

AFTERMARKET EYES and FAQ's
AFTERMARKET EYES and FAQ's
Are Aftermarket eyes just as good as factory eyes?
Are Laser eyes better than Factory eyes?- Not really. The only difference is you can visually see if they are working. Most buy them because they look cool.
There are 3 manufactures that are known for Aftermarket (laser) eyes for DM/Proto guns. - Lucky has 2 types of wired laser eyes:
- Lucky's proprietary Lucky laser eyes
- These eyes come in Blue, Red, Green, and Orange.
- These eyes fit Lucky boards ONLY:
- Lucky DM Laser eyes
- These eyes come in Blue, Red, Green, Purple, Yellow, and White.
- These eyes fit:
*NOTE* The DM6 would require DM6 Shocktech eye plate adapters, or Lucky recommends a 004 size, 70 durometer, urethane o-ring as a shim for DM eyes so they fit properly in a DM6. The DM6 will lose the Self-Cleaning eye functionality if you use Lucky DM Laser eyes.
- Tagsportz or Predator Electronics
- These eyes come in Blue, Clear, and Red.
- These eyes fit:
- Virtue – Laser eyes for PMR and PM7 guns only.
What aftermarket eyes fit my Stock Proto board
Stock PM5/PM6 board
PM5 Stock UL frame board- None. Factory eyes only.
- PMR and/or PM7 virtue laser eyes do NOT work either.
- If you want Aftermarket wired eyes, it would require you to buy an aftermarket board like the Un1chip board for PM5 Ultralite frame. This board will accept Lucky's proprietary Lucky laser eyes and Proto eye ribbons ONLY.
*NOTE* DM6 boards will not fit the PM5 UL frame because the PM5 solenoid extends in to the UL frame. Therefore, the shape of the PM5 UL frame board is different than the DM6... and the hole alignment is different. The Un1chip board for PM5 Ultralite frame is your only option if you want wired/laser eyes.
PM6 Stock UL frame board
Stock PM7 and PMR board- PMR and/or PM7 virtue laser eyes.
PM7 and PMR Stock UL frame board- PMR and/or PM7 virtue laser eyes.

You had to post that question in this thread?
Start a new thread so this one won't get cluttered. It might be the caliber size of the paintball.

Eye's not working/blinking green
Problem: Disconnect/broken wires on ribbon near spot where it plugs into the board.
Solution: Cut off the disconnect from the ribbon and now it works
***Made sure I left the some of the gold plated endings intact***
I had this problem and I was lucky to be able to fix it myself.
The problem was there was a disconnect on the ribbon near where it plugs into the board. You'll notice that the part that plugs into the board has gold (tipped wiring?). Since that's where the disconnect was (about halfway between the gold plating, I simply cut off the part that was broken and my eyes worked again.
