NT11 Cold Weather

Ok, so I searched around a bit and found some stuff about NT's in the cold and it's really not looking too good. I just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions of what I could try to stop getting breaks.

Most of the breaks look like they're barrel breaks, I don't see really any paint on the bolt or eye pipe when I take it out.

Right now I'm using the green insert at around 110psi according to the dye pressure tester. Barrel is .688 stock UL. I haven't tried using any of the spacers yet. I also bumped the dwell up to 10 and it seemed to help a bit, so I might try bumping it up another notch to 11 and see what happens. The only other thing I did is put an 010 purple oring on the green insert to make sure the balls weren't rolling back and getting clipped.

Thanks for any help.

Anyone else? I don't think this guy knows anything....

Lol. I'll try that stuff tomorrow. The paint was like valken field grade and the bag might have had a broken ball in it or two. So let's just say the paint isn't the best. That might be part of it, but the gun still breaks paint if I start to shoot a stream.

Seriously though, does the pressure need to be adjusted if I change the dwell? Or do I just need to make sure it's at the right fps?

I never worried about pressure as long as fps were where i wanted them. You'll need to lower it once you raise the dwell.

Raising the dwell doesn't directly effect the fps like it does on poppets, so your pressure should stay the same. Check the paint size to see if it's rolling around in the breach and clipping balls in the stack. Use winter paint, overbore slightly, and adjust your loader tension.

The rotor tension is flush so I'm pretty sure that's fine. I do have some other loaders laying around I might try though. Paint was rolling through a .688 so it's a significant overbore, but with the oring mod on the spacer there isn't much rolling around.

The balls aren't really clipping as far as I know. I would load two or three in the feed neck without a loader and they would shoot fine. I get the barrel breaks more when I start shooting a stream of paint.

Change your BPS to something like 3 BPS. If you don't suck that shouldn't be an issue

Good point. I usually one ball people off the break anyway so I should be fine.

Are your detents and eye pipe in good condition?

Yeah, I actually changed out for a spare eye pipe I had laying around. I haven't tested it with the different eye pipe, but I'm going to shoot some more tomorrow. The eye pipe and detents that were in it in the first place looked fine though.

Ok, I think I fixed the problem. I've made it through a few pods with no breaks finally. Here's what I ended up doing:

First I bumped the dwell up even more. I tried 11 and eventually moved it to 12. Then I tried it with the settings like this (green insert, no spacers) and it was still breaking no matter where I would adjust the pressure. If I got it too low then it would stop cycling properly.

So I decided to put one of the spacers in to see if that would help at all and it actually did. I'm using the yellow spacer right now and the pressure tester is showing 110 psi (whether or not it's accurate I don't know) and it was shooting fine. Now I'm not sure what the velocity is, but it seems to be around normal speeds.

I had to go to Walmart and buy a case of RPS Stinger (never even heard of it before) cause I was running low on paint. The stuff really isn't that bad for Walmart paint. It's got a harder shell but it shoots straight at least. No breaks from the Walmart paint, and the little bit of stuff I had that was breaking before even shot fine after I put the spacer in, granted there was only like 20 balls left of it.

So in conclusion, the yellow spacer is what I believe has solved my problem. I'm going to be playing this weekend so I can report back after I get more use, but right now it was shooting much better. No breaks from about 2 pods, whereas before I was breaking practically every ball once I started shooting a stream.

Any significant difference in temp out side or temp of paint?

No. It was basically the same temp today (lower to mid 30's), just a bit more wind. Paint temp was the same. I had it inside for a while before I shot it both times.

Well you need to shoot the same paint to get a true test.

Adding a yellow spacer had to drop your fps by about 30 (maybe more)

You keep saying chopping but in the op you say barrel breaks, which is it?

I said I did shoot some of the stuff I was shooting originally, just not very much.

You are probably right about the fps though unfortunately. No way I can know until this weekend though. I might try upping the pressure a bit and seeing if it starts breaking.

correcto

took my yellow spacer off at practice sunday, used the same pressure. increased fps by ~30 (from 270 to 300)

Well if paint is breaking in the NT because it's too brittle in the cold, chances are other guns will experience the same effect.

Are most gun bolt IDs the same, or is the NT larger? Given the eye pipe, detents, and pressures are where they should be I can't think of another reason why the NT would be an exception to handling brittle paint vs. other markers. I could shoot ultra evil out of my ego8, and that bolt doesn't stop for anything in front of it.

Sorry for the confusion, but I do mean barrel breaks. That's what it looks like at least. I edited the other posts so it's clear.

And I do realize the yellow spacer would drop velocity, but it is still shooting better than before. I had tried adjusting the pressure (velocity) all over the place and the paint would still break, even this Walmart paint I got.

And I can't imagine the velocity is too terribly low because it still shoots like it normally would. It's probably around 270 or something like you guys mentioned.
