Got my first quadcopter today

Hopefully I'll be able to build one to fly a camera within a year. Ultimate goal is this:

Yeah, and the barrier to entry is much higher than I was expecting.

Even this little guy is really hard to fly (even though I've only been trying for about an hour). Hex and Octas are super expensive and they aren't plug-and-play. There's a bunch of setup involved with most platforms.

And after all of that, it's a pain to make any money doing it. Once you start accepting payment you "should" clear your flight plans with the FAA (from what I understand).

I've never felt so overwhelmed going into a hobby. I'm thinking about starting a blog similar to learningdslrvideo.com/ as a way to have everything in one place for noobs like myself.

That is ****ing awesome.

Do the more expensive copters stabilize themselves when floating in place?

Yeah. You can get a gps system that will keep the copter in place. It even accounts for wind direction.

They also have systems where you just plot the flight into a computer and the copter executes it. But where's the fun in that

How much we talkin for a primo set up? Cause I think I'd rather spend the money on a sports car.

The one used in the video I posted is here: http://www.quadrocopter.com/Cinestar-8-RTF_p_627.html ($9,890)

If you're able to put one together youself, it's about $3,000 cheaper.

Bluewolf, look into computer simulators that you can plug your remote control into. I used to go into a local hobby shop that had one like an "arcade" get-up. I've seen "pros" say they're just as hard, or harder than flying a real plane/heli. I used to do all kinds of tricks on the thing. haha

That's nuts, reminds me of some of the stuff my dad used to make. He used to be into model railroading, but never had a rolling scene as he concentrated more on the modeling aspect than running trains, and his work was always ongoing. He rarely used kits, and hand made all of his scenery, buildings and infrastructure. I remember him sitting at the table cutting tiny little pieces of foil, then grooving them with a toothpick and dusting them with spray paint to make his own corrugated tin siding for his buildings. Stuff looked mad impressive.

Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking about getting a simulator soon. I still haven't decided what transmitter I want yet.

I just pre-ordered the Hero3 Black, so I'm putting helicopter stuff on hold for the next month or so.

So it's saturday, and I'm in my room redecorating with all the artwork I just got, along with making candle holders surrounded by coffee beans. Is this normal?

Your estrogen level sounds a little high.

In other news, I'm watching the biggest panic I've ever seen over a tropical storm that's going to make landfall nowhere near my area. Now there's been an earthquake in western Canada. Any minute now I'm expecting the local fundies to be out in force telling me to repent because the world is coming to an end.
