Food for thought:

Disney owns Marvel Universe. They didn't rape the **** out of Iron Man or The Avengers, so I'm gonna go ahead and wait to see what Disney does with Star Wars. This may end up being great for the franchise seeing as Eps 1-3 were unbelievably bad.

This. Lucas ruined the franchise well enough on his own, there is nothing Disney could do to make it worse, and it's in their best interest to make sure they turn out good.

Stars Wars isn't going anywhere no matter what. It might be the most valuable IP in the world. A movie every 2-3 years, James Bond style sounds just fine to me. Personally, I'm looking forward to the movies after 7,8,9 where they said they would be looking at the entire 20,000 year universe history. I think a movie set during the Old Republic could be great.

The real question is will anyone worth while direct it?
Fingers crossed for Joss Whedon. He already has a relationship with them thanks to The Avengers.

15 years ago most people would probably say this was a terrible idea. But after what Lucas did with his prequels...well, maybe it doesn't seem so bad afterall, maybe it'll actually be a good thing!

I'd like to see Gore Verbinski do it. If I had to pick from all the blockbuster directors tied to Disney.

Back in '78 the original announcement that I recall was for three trilogies, 9 movies in all. I just assumed that the last had been abandoned. But the treatment has always been 9 movies.

Avengers 2 is set to release that same year. Whedon could probably do a good Star Wars, but he has a better connection to comics and the Marvel universe and I honestly would hate to see someone else do Avengers 2.

Edgar Wright wrote Ant-Man and is supposed to be directing it, so I could see his chances to direct good.

George Lucas wrote episodes 7-8-9 already and like said, there's plenty of post-rtoj stories to pick from. I'd rather them do something dealing with the kids and bring the OG cast as cameos. I wouldn't count for a 2015 release date though, Avengers 2 is scheduled for 2015, one's going to change.
Also not mentioned is Disney's acquisition of Industrial Light and Magic, they'll make plenty of the money back through that.

Edit: Empire Strikes Back was 100000x better than Return of the Jedi. ROTJ was a excellent film, but ESB was better. It was like how The Dark Knight Rises wasn't as great as The Dark Knight.

Who's to say for sure that they use Lucas' treatments, though. A lot of things can change before they begin production.

Sidenote: Ant-Man is going be ****ing crazy good.

From what I understand, Lucas has rough stories for 7,8,9. Not full fledged scripts. Kerry Kennedy (the executive producer and new head of Lucasfilm) is not beholden to Lucas's ideas in anyway. He has relinquished everything Star Wars to her.

There were rumors flying around that Joe Johnston (The director of Capt. America, and creator of Boba Fett) was talking to Lucas about making a movie about Fett. I'm praying to the Star Wars gods that this will end up happening now!

Fett movie would be sweet. I read the EU books about what happened after he escaped the Sarlac a long time ago and remember really liking them.

Looks like the prophesy from the 1983 Mad Magazine is true. Too bad the world is coming to an end in December and we won't ever be able to find out how it ends.

I don't know what's funnier, that comic panel or your Mayan calendar reference.

That depends on how much they let George Lucas interfere.

And on whether or not Michael Bay releases anything.

Of course Disney could go full retard and have George Lucas produce it and Michael Bay direct it...

When you say things like this, it makes my penis retract ever so slightly into my body, and ache.
