So what you REALLY mean to say is that you don't want to go through the trouble of hiring a designer and paying him/her a wage of $75+ an hour that they SHOULD be getting for doing such a large scale design...so you're gonna "give away" a "prize" of $1000 for having a massive amount of people compete. And once they do you get the best of both worlds, design and price.
These are the types of things that result in the design industry lowering its standards because people have no idea what it takes to do things of this nature. Just my 2 cents

Try to realize that this is a fun competition to give those who are creative but maybe have not decided to take up design as a profession to chance to have their spot in the history of our sport.
Professionals who play paintball are more than welcome to contribute.
It cost about USD 150,000 to paint the plane.I do believe the USD 75 per hour you were worried about is hardly a cost that was even considered.
Would paintballers be given this chance if you even want to bid for the design work? There are tonnes a great and well known designers out there.
What I am saying is this...see this as a great thing for our sport and a potential showcase for the talents & professionals that is among us paintballers.
The glass is either half full or half empty...love life or be the hater..cheers!

keep a open mind on what they are doing. i feel that it is a great thing that they are doing. if you are designing then you know how big this can be for your career. the outcome is huge. and if you are not designing in this contest or not a designer please keep things positive for the rest of us that is really into this. why is it that USA ballers have so much to say and its the rest of the world that takes paintball and go big with it. "be humble to the game and the game will be humble to you" thats my 2 cents

It is a great thing for paintball no doubt, I didn't say anything about that. What I'm saying is that it's bad for the design profession either way. Obviously it's just my opinion and I'm expressing it, via the interweb, on a forum, which is what it's meant for.
I will not be participating because of this and again, was just my 2 cents. No doubt is it good for paintball and I'm all for that. But the way in which they are going about it is wrong.
People tend to disregard designers because everyone thinks they can do it themselves just as good, if not better, which is completely false. Nobody has any idea what it takes to be a designer as a profession. This would be like me deciding I want to run a tournament series, which 0 experience...running it horribly wrong and creating a bunch of bad news about the industry while doing so.
Paint a plane with paintball on it everywhere, but don't make a contest out of it. Hype it as what it is, a plane painted with PALS and paintball and everyone would respect it just as much

Wow really? Complaints, I believe this is a contest for fun and not to get a cheaper design. Lolz its not about the kaching kaching its about doing something for the sport, its about the pride of seeing your work on a plane.
Its all about fun, this is the first thing I noticed different When I moved to North america. Paintball is dominated by the issue of money, either team fees, paint, prizes or etc. In the other part of the world at least that part, people are promoting it for sport and for fun. Paint prices actually drop during tourneys, on some of the tourism sponsored events they even get you in for free. I was there when they had pro teams come over to play. Watching them have fun in the field was awesome. There Paintball is played by managers, businessman and govt officials along with ordinary people. Why??? Coz its fun. So when they say its not about hiring a pro design firm but getting a paintball design from a paintballer, its probably the truth. As you guys say "it is what it is".
