Unveiled officially at the 2011 Spike VGA's, this is a post apocalyptic outbreak game being developed by Naughty Dog, the Sony 1st party developing giant responsible for AAA titles like Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, and of course the Uncharted series. This is Naughty Dogs first M rated game and will be single player only.
This game is set to use the same engine as Uncharted which ND has had plenty of time to perfect through said series. A completely separate development team has been working on this title in complete secrecy for the last 2-3 years. I think its safe to say nobody expected a new IP from ND at the VGA's considering its proximity to the release of Uncharted 3.
The "antagonist" in the universe is a ravenous strain of fungus which apparently takes control of the human brain and ultimately grows through its victims skull, presumably reproducing thereafter by releasing spores. This premise is clearly based off of the real life Cordyceps fungi (featured in a pre-release teaser video) which is notorious for infecting the brains of insects and causing a delerious state shortly before killing its host and similarly erupting from its victims head and reproducing.
From the below quotes it is apparent that the developers at Naughty Dog are trying to set a higher standard in character driven storytelling through video games. Given the premise of this game it is sure to be filled with emotionally charged moments, and some epic action given their history in the Uncharted series.

We are excited to finally unveil The Last of Us, a project the team has been working hard on for some time. Naughty Dog’s mission is to change the way people experience videogames. We are confident The Last of Us will take a leap forward in cinematic gaming and storytelling, providing gamers with an experience unlike anything else in the industry.

As scary as that sounds, the fungus is healthy to eat for humans
there are different types of the fungus for different species
so yes the type that kills those ants is no harm to humans
but drawing a parrallel from their situation to ours is made that much easier by the fact that it is happening, the ant fungus in particular is only one variety of the fungus that specializes on that species of ant, there are many other types of cordyceps, each specializing on a different insect.
so in many ways it is something to think about considering we dont know if there is (or ever could be) a type of cordyceps that would make the leap to infecting humans.
if your referring to the one with all the vegitation
Im not certain its in-game (way to early to tell) but if it is, then it should be a decent looking game
be sure to tune in to the VGAs in a few hours for the big unveiling, Ill be at Buffalo Wild Wings watching the Jon Jones fight so it should be on one of the tv's their, sans the volume unfortunately
Yeah if those graphics somehow become "in game graphics" and not just cut scene graphics, then next gen basically just arrived. Those are a cut above anything else currently on the market, PC or console. I'm glad Naughty Dog is making this game. They only have a few IP's to their credit, but they have yet to release a bad game.
I don't buy this is "another zombie game" I think it will be deeper than that. The previously shown videos has me hopeful that a slightly deeper story has potential to be unveiled.
This is going to be awesome, gameplay and details wanted
Little hint in the trailer that they are going to do things right with zobie survival, she scavenged the bullets from the guys pocket, that makes me excited
