New protege on its way to me, few questions

So it looks like alot more people have PT for there g6rs then gen5 timmys, having some trouble tracking one down for them.

Is it easier it set the LPR on them or something? Nearly all the listings ive seen with them theres no testers included. Just use lurkers method? Owner I purchased it from said he never used one and shot it for an entire season

I tryed lurkers method on my g6r and didnt get it right at all, i turned the HPR way down then turned the LPR up just enough for the bolt to cycle. Went to chrono and i kept getting balls stuck in the barrel, not even making it all the way out. Had the hpr nearly all the way in shooting 110 FPS, couldnt get it any higher. Should i have turned the LPR up slightly and tryed again? I know i set velocity with the LPR with that method but i figured i need a fps of higher then 110 lol between that be the high and balls getting stuck in the barrel any lower really i gave up and used know settings to achieve 285.

Basically wanna know if i really need to track down a tester for my gen5 or no, and if theres a easy way to get about 70psi with no tester

EDIT: Would setting the HPR to 200 then adjusting LPR to field velocity be a sufficient method or no? A hpr tester is easy lol

You adjust the Lpr the same as a g6r..

You can make a gen 5 Lpr tester as there are to find new or used.

Setting the pressures to what is in the manual or on the QC card will work. Though generally you can just set the Lpr to 75 psi then adjust hpr to chrono.

Use a piece of macro line, then with a few fittings thread a gauge to it.

Gen5 testers cost $15 to make.
Picked up a good 0-200psi 2" gauge from tractor supply in 1/4" npt thread then grabbed a 1/4" to 1/4" female npt adaptor from ace hardware.
Put light amount of blue lock tight or Teflon tape on threads and put any macro adaptor and your gauge of choice.
Next find a thick piece of straight macro line 6" or so cut straight. Connect macro to your tester and push the macro into where the ram would go. Should be a pretty tight fit and it might take a couple diff pieces. Hang onto the tester when you air up in case its loose. Mine is so tight I'm hands free when testing it.

Edit: make sure to take the macro fitting into the store with you for size and fitting. This will save you at least one trip to the store.

I honestly have no idea how that would work at all, how would a macro line seal the rammer? The tester has orings and threads

Seriously macro fits???????? I already have a 0-160psi and some macro, where can i find the elbow to connect the female-female too? Just a PB shop or does ace carry them too?

Essentially all I do with a gen 5 is this:

Zero out both regs - turn in the inline reg two full turns so it has air going through it.

Then turn up the LPR 1 1/2 turns from flush. Shoot it over the chrono. See where you're at.

If you need more velocity, turn up the HPR a 1/8-1/4 turn until the velocity begins to drop.

Then turn up the LPR (1/16-1/8 turn) until velocity and consistency is correct.

BTW, this works on g6rs too.

Same 2 turn hpr and 1.5 on lpr to start with g6r as well as protege? I will try then when mine shows up, but if i can make a tester that easy ill get one made this weekend too

Is that explanation above me just a knocked off version of sweet spotting? Or would sweet spotting via lurkers style yield different pressures?

Still trying to get my g6r's consistency to +/- 5, will also want my protege shooting this well.

Knocked off isn't very good terminology...

LOL

It's the way I typically do it and it works for me, so I figured I'd share.

Haha well to be honest that sounds easyer then lurkers style, i guess knocked off isnt the right word.

Thank you for sharing, it seems like it will be easyer. As you read above i havnt quite figured out his yet lol Ima try this weekend on both my gen5 & 6 and hope for +/- 5 on both. Thanks Tim!

BTW, I used the method tim described and I was within ~2psi when I verified with a pressure tester. The other thing you can do is start with a known pressure on the HPR (using an asa pressure tester) then tune the LPR to full cycle plus 1/8 turn. Then do the rest to chrono.

When you say do the rest to chrono, i would continue adjusting with LPR right? Say this was a protege and i set the HPR to 200psi first

That's what I did. Set the HPR to ~200 then set the LPR to cycle + 1/8 turn then adjust the HPR to the desired FPS.

Paintball fittings are 1/8" NPT - not 1/4"

I origionally had 1/8 in my post but thought thats too small. Trying to do stuff from memory is becoming a pain in the rear.

Thanks for catching that.

Like this. 1/8 NPT female-female adapter. 6-7" piece of macro line. Gauge of choice. 0-100psi is all that is necessary but I have an Evil 300psi gauge because it was free. Pull out the ram and this contraption fits right in and does the same job as a BL pressure tester.

Easy mistake to make. The actual OD of the fitting is closer to 0.40"

Specific dimensions can be found here:
