I seriously doubt you can tig 1/2" aluminum that well.
And for aluminum you need to run hot as hell, aluminum dissipates heat much faster than any metal.

big headed much? Its good but not great
Bikes are pretty much all aluminum...it's not some lost skill to work with it.

what property of the welder (yes, I know how they operate) causes taht patern? when I welded in Design and Production, it resulted in a rough, matte-looking surface, but it had no such pattern.

Good job dude, welding is really hard, whether aluminum or steel.

It's a TIG welder, and when you move the torch and apply more material, it creates that pattern. TIG welding is a totally different ball game.

so if you lowered the rate the wire is fed, you can avoid that?

On a MIG welder, a lot of things can cause that. I'm no expert, but I have welded things a couple times. I'm not that bad at it. I'm going to take a course in advanced welding/TIG in march.

More than likely a machine did that. Also, the metal is a lot thinner then what I did, making it much easier.

people take courses just to weld? no offense, but does one need a course in moving a tube that's feeding wire that melts? I am in NO WAY saying in the less than 8 minutes of welding I've doen I'm half as good as you guys the first time you picked up a welder, but....

There is much more to moving a tube which feeds wire. You have to know what wire to use when welding specific materials, wire speed, amperage (sp?), and of course there are quite a few different types of welds.

you are a moron. Welding is hard IMO, I have only tried it a couple times and sucked at it. I would like to learn someday though.

Of course people take courses you ****ing moron. I know you don't think this, but not everyone is as good at things as you claim to be. In the real world, you don't learn a skill by reading about it in a magazine. Unlike you, not everyone is graced by God with every talent and every bit of knowledge. I knew you were an idiot, but this post was just too much.

Okay, you can mig, anyone can. Your welds probably look like ****, have bad penetration, bad color, no bead, etc.
It takes years to learn how to weld good because you need to learn what the metal is going to do, how to manipulate the metal, how to run a bead without burning through, etc.

So he's a good stick welder, that doesn't mean he can tig.
He could be the best stick welder in the world, but could tig as well as a 5 year old.
