iBasso D-Zero is what I'll be buying. Some people like the E17 better but it's more expensive and I'm not sure I'd ever notice the difference.

Problem is, it's kind of a pain to get DACs to work with mobile devices. Most people, as far as I'm aware, will just use them as amps when they're on the go, and use them as DAC/amps when they're at a desktop/laptop.

what's this i'm seeing about pairing the e17 with an e9? isn't the e17 already a dac/amp? or is it just a dac?

it's worth noting that i'll probably only ever be listening from a laptop or a mobile device. whatever I end up using should be portable. the e17 seems as though it'd be easier to stuff into a pocket and make quick adjustments.

I don't know. That seems really stupid and I looked it up earlier today, actually. Seems like people like the E17's DAC, but the E9's amp. And it possibly uses both amps in-line, so you don't get as much distortion from amplification as you would if you were really pushing one single amp hard.

E17 should be fine for what you're looking for. The D-zero is a very similarly functioning device in a smaller, cheaper package, but from what I've read, its battery life isn't quite as good.

The E17/E9 combo is really only for hardcore audiophiles afaik. E17 is probably even a bit of overkill for most entry-level to mid-level audiophiles.

i don't want to delve into the whole audiophile "listen to music to analyze the sound" thing, I want to listen to music to listen to music. i'm thinking 770s or 880s should be great, and an e17 would be nice to have in my backpack or shoulder bag (assuming i become a hipster in college). i'm not sure just how open the 880s are, but i'll look into it. if you really enjoy your 770s that much, i'll look into those a bit more heavily.

fwiw i listen to lots of stuff, but no rap. very little classical, if any. i'd say the top 5 are classic rock, alternative rock, jazz, blues, and electronic (as in massive attack and the like, not the wubwub oonce oonce nonsense). radiohead and miles davis are my top two right now.

thanks for the help, soobra

I certainly don't have a ton of experience with different headphones, but compared to the others I've heard, the DT770s are quite impressive.

head-fi.org is your friend, they have reviews of pretty much everything

Also headphone.com has reviews and frequency response curves for all the headphones they sell.

Edit: As far as open vs closed:

DT770 isolation | -10dB ~ -12dB
DT880 isolation | -5dB ~ -10dB

So it still isolates but it's not going to be nearly as isolating as the 770. If you don't think you'll be in loud environments very often, they should be okay.

i'm not so much concerned about being in loud environments, since I have a pair of closed headphones, but I don't want to enrage my roommate with sound leakage.

Well unless you're trying to make yourself go deaf, you don't really have issues there.

I can make a vid with my 770s to show how good they isolate. Gimme a hot minute.

Uploading now. The first bit of the video you see/hear is at about normal listening levels. When it gets louder, you'll hear it. That's way louder than most people would probably listen, and definitely louder than I would suggest.

As it gets loud/muffled/loud/muffled it's me opening and closing the cups against eachother. I only touch the volume knob the one time.

The first time it goes quiet, they weren't all the way sealed on the bottom, that's why it was still kinda audible.

I can get another better vid later on, but I have nothing to hold my phone right now so it's kinda awkward making a vid involving the use of my hands. Usually I can use my car mount to rig something up.

When Dustin Worles (Owner of Mischief) posted that, I was eating, watched it, and proceeded to choke on my food from laughing.
