Paintball in NM
Hey eveyone, I was just wondering what the paintball situation is like in NM, I dont see too many fields around Alb. area, 1 or 2 from what I saw on pbreview.com. Im thinking about starting up a field, turf, airball nppl, x ball, any maybe 1-2 more different fields to play at. What should I know about the players in NM, what do you all like? thanks Matt.

Better do your research first. In the summer, The heat keeps ppl away, not to metion: High winds(every season) rain, snow. The fields open there now are , on a scale 1-10, around a 6. There are more woodsballers than tourney players. ...

Maybe most of that is true, but like he said, fields around here right now are nothing to brag about, so if you can even somewhat improve on them, i'm sure you'll have business. At least you'll have my business.
The West side of Albuquerque or into Rio Rancho could really use one, as of right now it is a drive to get anywhere from there.

Yeah, I am not too fimilar with the layout of Alb. but my family lives in Placitas/Rio Rancho, I would like something centrally located to make it easy for everyone.
Well if I get this up and running I hope to have more of the players converting to tournament type play I hope with enough money I will be able to have 2-3 scenarioish fields.
I think the wind factor can be taken care of with enough netting. Rain, ehh.
snow.. at least it will help you slide haha. If I can get enough $$ I would love to have an indoor field or two, but the cost on a building is very expensive. As for the heat, I plan to have part of the staging area with misters, which will hopefully help players cool off between rounds.

Best of luck to you partner. I recently moved from Socal myself. I played in the XPSL and NPPL, worked for(and still) FEP. I considered opening a pbfield out here too. Instead I now own the land and have a "private" Field. Abq is about 3 hours from where I live (las cruces/el paso). I'd travel out here first and check out the scene. Right now its Pb season, weather is good...so far. LMK if you need any help. I got extra airball set ups and hyperball pipe.

i live in Placitas and i used to live in Rio Rancho and Abq. The PBA field isnt too bad but its nothing like Colorado, although they do try. Alot of people dont like the owner or at least didnt when played alot more a couple of years ago. PBA had a field in the EastMts area off of South 14 in the canyon but i know that Randell the owner was phasing it out and only using it for catering large parties, Intel always had company days up there. it had a sup air, woodsball, and a town field; it would get really busy in the mid summer and i believe one day topped 75 people. there was a field in Rio Rancho across from Intel. it was shut down about a year ago i believe the neighboring businesses complained about paintmarks or noise. Hinkle is just crap btw, i played there once and it just wasnt any fun. but really what is as fun as worldcup???
a couple of stores came in and out of business, such as Genesis Paintball for example. i remember alot of people would complain about attitude toward nubs comming in just wanting to know about woodsball. people in NM are weird and often cant handle criticism but i understand where they are coming from. lots of people wont even go to PBA. online prices beat out most of theirs.
there are alot of "Ballers" per say but most play in the Bosque for free, go go woodsball i guess.
sure there is wind but only in the spring! rain is on and off with us here as the wet season seems to last longer these days, however it mostly rains in the evening and only for a few hours at a time. snow is a complete fluke in the city and we normally only get it in the mountains or the far west side. heat isnt that bad we mostly sit in the 90s and hit some 100s only a couple times during the summer, sure its hot but nowhere near AZ and its never humid here. seriously i played a rockymountain states series game in 5 feet of snow just south of denver a few years back. all the bunkers were snow with a few sup air in the back rows, it was a blast!!! not really that cold either.
a big thing to think about is where to put your store/field, as you may or may not know is this city is F**ked up with bridges across that stream the Rio Grande. so going from the west side to the east side is difficult during mornings and afternoon. weekends blow as every slow Sunday driver is out on the road doing at least 15 below the speed limit in those damned subarus!!!
if you want some help doing it i could be interested. just need to nail out some details and such so send me a pm if you want.

players dont play because 1 heat? 2 high winds? 3rain/snow? sounds like a perfect oportunity for in indoor field.

Indoor would be ideal, but not as of now, the pricing is just so much more for indoor.
Evil, thanks for all of the information, I will definately send you a pm, in the coming months when I start looking into it more seriously (moving, loans, location, etc.) I know there is alot of area out there, alot if fuzzy seeing as how I only make it out there every 2-3 years to visit family. My uncle is a well known artist out there, so maybe I can get him to pitch in some $$

Evil is pretty on point with most of his information. However, PBA isn't out in the mountains anymore. It is now in downtown ABQ on Central (aka Rt 66). The place in the mountains still exists but is run by someone different. Randell still runs PBA in ABQ and like he said no one really likes the way he runs his business. He's all about the bottom dollar; not promoting the sport.
There is a place in Bosque Farms, which is south of ABQ and off I-25 aways, but it run by some shady mothers and who knows how long it will last. Finally, there is an indoor place that opened in Belen, which is 30 minutes south of ABQ, about 1.5-2 months ago. The guy that runs it is really cool; he's from CA also. That's where I play now.

I have heard there are people that play pretty regularly down south in Las Cruces, but I'm just barely getting into paintball so I don't have all the info yet. There may be a field or two down here, but their websites are down so I have no idea if they still have a presence here.
I guess there is El Paso, but 'tis not my favorite city to visit... so I don't know. I'll get ahold of my wife's friend who's an avid paintballer and see what he says. There is probably some private group that goes out into the desert and runs around.

The best area for a new field is definately going to be in and around ABQ. There is a lot of land for sale on the west side of ABQ. I am just getting back into the sport now after a looong break, so I have no idea how well PBA is doing. The owner only has 2/3 of the field open now (snow caused the rest of the net roof to cave in. I was there last Sunday at around 12:30 and noone was there. He said he usually gets a late crowd. A lot of people hate Randal, but I have never really understood why. As a business owner, how can he not be all about the bottom dollar? He was always good to us when we played there. He helped us get our sponsorship from Dye, too.
As Adam said, if you need help when you are ready I might be able to offer a bit as well. Always happy to see a new field. Plus Adam needs supervision.

the majority of the serious players play all year long where ever we can. alot of people die off during the winter due to the cold but alot of us make due with what we have and still play

The Paintball Field in Belen is sweet. The field is nice, the owner is really cool, its all air bunkers and speedball format, also its really cheap. You can BYOP or you can buy thier paint for $30-$35 and entery fee is $10.
