You don't say? I'll probably be drunk anyways. Beer on me if you decide to stop.

Weekends depend on unit
My unit has a permanent weekend crew
If your fighters there's an article acc put out about cutting all non ftu or deploying units flight hours dramatically and adding in sim time
Less flying = less mx

I'll put it this way. In all my years of growing up then being in. Shaw, Lakenheath, and Holloman are the three places I've never heard anything good about. From anyone.

We're working 4 and 3. Everybody gets one weekend day off. Not the worst schedule I've worked.

Shaw is about 20-30 mins from Columbia, SC, about 4 hours from Atlanta, 2 hours to Augusta.
Shaw itself is in the middle of no where.

Listen to whoever you want and let it ruin your view of your next assignment. It is what you make it. WTF does a instructor at your tech school (normally not among the best and brightest) know about a base he probably hasn't been at in over a year at the most. I hate ****bags in the AF who paint a bad picture for young guys vs letting them make their own judgement.

This goes for any assignment. Go in with an open mind and see how it is. I heard people at Kadena talk about how the island sucked and there was nothing to do blah blah blah as they sat on their *** in the day room watching TV. I spent 7 years there and never got bored. I got orders to Tinker and my own visions of tumbleweed and rednecks along with others input I was dreading it. Decided it wasn't right to judge off others. Ended up loving it there. Draw your own conclusions from your experience

everywhere has its charm, you just have to find it. Also, don't spend your ****ing weekends chilling in your dorm room. If that's all you do then you have nobody to blame for hating where you're stationed but yourself. Unplug yourself from the internet, turn off the xbox and then go do something. The south is pretty rich in history if you're into that sort of thing and you might have to drive a couple hours but to say 'there's nothing to do' is a fallacy and self limiting.
Proof of Concept:
Beale AFB is in the middle of damn nowhere and the nearest town sucks ***. Sacramento is a half hour from where I live, I could go skiing pr snowboarding if I didn't hate the **** out of cold weather, SF is a two hour drive, I could head into the mountains in the summer to go hiking or some **** and Yosemite is something like three hours away. It's entirely possible to find something fun to do if you're willing to look and don't mind a small road trip to get there.
aside from the ****ty beer laws Tinker doesn't sound like a bad place to be. I have a buddy out at Vance right now and I think I know what they did to pass the time because his wife is now pregnant.

Tinker has a sweet bar district in okc. I liked it better than Dallas while at Shepard

You guys misunderstood. I was referring to how it is to work there, not in the ways on things to do. Myrtle Beach and Charleston are two hours away, Columbia 1 hour, and there will be Tough Mudder/Spartan race only 1-1.5 hours away in November in which I will partake. I'll find things to do, I remember some stuff from when I used to live there. I just want to know how the tempo/atmosphere on base will be. The instructors said it's non stop with lots of weekends as workdays.

My response had nothing to do with the local area. Ops tempo changes all the time. Stop worrying about it. Again, some AETC instructor knows jack and **** about current ops.

Basically if sequestration kicks in (which its not), we've been told to plan for a 30% reduction in flying hours and I would imagine the maint/parts budget would be cut as well. Not going to be pretty. We can't maintain CMR right now as it is with the hours/****ty birds we have already.

True. 60 world is pretty wrecked from budget issues
I can't see how it can get any worse as far as mxs. Other than just make us sit and let the birds be nmc

work hard, play hard. It might suck but it's what you get paid to do.

I'd rather be really busy than to sit around and stare at the walls for 8 hours
