For the first week:
Sir, yes, sir. Sir, no, sir. Sir, aye aye, sir.
For week 2-8:
Yes, Petty Officer _____. No, Petty Officer _____. Aye aye, Petty Officer ____. I don't know, Petty Officer ____.
That, alone, will keep you out of a lot of trouble. I don't know how many times I heard people say yes or no without the "Petty Officer ____" and get completely reamed. Also, it's better to go ahead and suck it up and admit you don't know something than to pull out an off the wall guess and be wrong. If you're confident in an answer, give it. If you're not, tuck your pride away and admit that you don't know.
In the squad bay, don't try to stand out and bump your chest as the top dog, but don't slack off either. If you stand out as trying to put yourself in charge, you'll get noticed and given responsibilities. A lot of the responsibilities are to show you that you can, in fact, fail. Company commanders are there to teach you to be a follower, not to be a leader. If you try to exert yourself as a leader, you will be shown that you aren't in charge. If you are assigned a leadership role, though, do it to the very best of your abilities. If you are not a stand-out, and they make you a leader, then it's more than likely to motivate you or teach you a lesson that you need to learn. On the flip side, for academics and the physical fitness, you want to give it your all. If you don't, they'll notice and make you pay for it.
In the galley, don't talk or look around. Nothing is more embarrassing than having to make a fool of yourself in front of 4 other companies for the enjoyment of the company commander that caught you.
If you play an instrument, do band. I got a couple of off base days extra because of the band. YMMV though, but it will, at least, get you out of a few beatings.
Last, but probably most important, learn all of your required knowledge! You will be stopped and asked questions in the galley. You will be asked at the range. You will be asked between classes. The less you know, the more PT you will get. The less you know, the more PT your entire company will get.
CC: "meandmyGAYtippmann, what's your second general order?
GAY: "I don't know Petty Officer Douchebag"
CC: "Alright guys, 30 more minutes of *insert whatever uncomfortable workout you are presently doing*"
Week 1: This is the same as the movies - piece of cake.
Week 2-5: Why the hell did I do this?
Week 6-7: This isn't so bad anymore.
Week 8: Don't **** up.
