This was a good thread. I also used to play about 10 years ago, no tourneys or anything, but I played. I had a shocker that cost a pretty penny. Now that I'm getting back into I'm just looking for a 100$ used Electronic marker. More for "weekend warrior" type stuff.

Pump is a great way to cut costs, you'll learn a lot more technical stuff too and will probably be a better play in semi/electro once you get a job
Me? I buy sell and trade paintball guns to play, though only recreation-ally for now at least

I play with a pistol... Semi-auto in case I need it but it still saves a TON on paint. Paintball becomes a lot more affordable when you only need to buy a bag or two of paint instead of a whole case

Cut the things I dont need out of my life and changed up my routines.
-quit smoking
-quit drinking
-stopped buying a new car every year
-started taking left overs for lunch
-made a rule that I only stop at gas stations on Sunday to fill my truck up, wether I need gas or not, pay at the pump and never go in
Also, I agree that some fields charge crazy prices to play which makes it hard for some people to go. However, I do agree with some of the crazy prices to an extent, especially at the field local to me, it keeps the white trash away.

And i thought that paying $65 for a case of paint and $25 entry fees with all day air was expensive.

I almost don't want to say it here on PbNation but I've even looked into "airsoft"....

I started playing pump a couple months ago (First one of my friends to do so) and I had no problems keeping up with semi's also some of my friends are getting pumps now. If you want a pump that can still achieve a pretty good rate of fire look at the empire sniper. I have one and I love it.

Yeah, i mean they have a great pro shop and good staff.... but that's not convincing me to pay 120+ for a day of paint balling. But its all good i drive like an hour+ to a place that has 20 fees and air and 40-45$ paint with many more fields and great staff. Very worth the drive!

I am wondering how you guys afford to play in tournaments? I mean, field fees run around $15-$25. Field paint ($40 for the cheap stuff and $50 and up for the good stuff). So your looking at $70 to 100 bucks to practice with a team once a week or so. Then there is keeping up with the newest markers and other paintball gear and travel cost.
So, how do you guys afford it? Is this your only hobby? Do you have a second job? Beg? Borrow?
Thanks,
|
There is the problem. Quit trying to keep up with the latest gear, just buy some good stuff that works. Plus try to play only local-ish tourneys until you can afford to travel more.

A job. I work shift so some weekends I work too so it cuts paintball time. I go to a tourney when I have money if there's none I stay at home.
Move to North Dakota or something no paintball during winter that will help you save up money for the summer season. and yes a job/work/OT/scabbing etc.

Dual household income. Being married does have perks, most notably my wife makes much more than me so i'm essentially a trophy husband. Even still, i can only afford legit field costs once a month, and outlaw ball once a month (1 case of paint lasts long enough for both, sometimes more).
Don't play tourneys anymore, though, because the cost WAS a major factor, and so was limited time for travelling to events.

I just try to grab as many hours as I can, which is pretty difficult when my sports practices don't end until about 5pm, then I have homework and clubs and a bunch of other stuff. My workplace is pretty leniet with the employees switching hours, so all the employees are a part of a Facebook group where I can usually find an extra shift or two that someone else is trying to dump. I'll grab an extra shift if I know for a fact that I'll be playing that weekend.
I've been thinking about getting a cheap pump to help conserve paint. Sometimes I don't pay attention to how much I shoot in the course of a full day at the field and I blow through a case only playing recball.

I have just recently started playing along with my 13 yo son. He pushes a lawn mower around the neighborhood to help the funding, I didn't really research costs. Shame on me. I've given up other hobbies to play, this keeps us in better shape than golf. I also do odd and end things outside the job and it seems to help a little.
