Angry PS3 stopped readying BluRay discs

Came home from a business trip and my wife left me note saying that the PS3 no longer plays BluRays. I call, aske what's up, and she explains she put in a movie and it wouldn't read. She could hear it spinning but it wouldn't show up in the menu.

Games work, DVDs work, internet connection is strong. Just no BluRay discs.

Happen to anyone else? Any ideas about what to check first before either buying a new one or sending it away to get fixed?

PS3 games are also on Blu-Ray disks, so if it's reading those, it's not a hardware problem...

Really? I did not know that.

Was there an update in the last week or so? We watched the The Dark Knight Rises last Thursday and it worked fine.

Yeah, they've always been Blu-Ray.

As for the update, negative. Tell her to try a different Blu-Ray. I can't think of any reason they wouldn't work.

Any firmware updates available for the PS3? I've had to do those in the past on non-PS3 players in order to get newer movies to play.

She said she did, but I'll double check when I get home. She emailed Sony and they sent her a standard list of tech checks. One was a different disc. She's pretty smart about technology stuff, so I believe her when she says she did.

Any other ideas?

So now it's doing the opposite. The games don't work, but the blurays work fine.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it may be in the process of crapping out. If you are still under your warranty, use it now. If not prepare to pay Sony some money to get a replacement.

Long past warranty

Took it apart, cleaned the lenses, working like a champ.

I tried that at first. It didn't help. So I took it apart and cleaned everything. Used alcohol and a swab Olathe lenses. Still running great

If it happens again, you may need to replace the lenses or the whole drive.

It's about an 80-100$ repair you can do yourself.
