It was my first time at EMR and I'll come back for sure. It was beyond a quality event. Attacking the castle with a pump gun was one hell of a challenge.

Good point on the reffing too Chris. Not just during the big game but the whole weekend refs were on top of safety and always helpful.

i can't take it any more....has anyone even asked were they get all the refs from........how about a shout to the ones that taught all these excellent reffs....this caliber of reffs like "sprinkles" isn't just a "walk on reff" like some of the reffs up there and its just starting to annoy me that the ones actually doing all the work to "mold" them into fine and fair reffs are nto even recognized..................now i'm not just talking from a players view....i'm a ref also and have stood side by side with "sprinkles" and other well trained reffs and sadly enough i see a desparate need for improvement from the "walk on reffs".....not in safety, but in the means of fair play and actually knowing all the rules and properly enforcing said rules..........

sorry to say but i really think some of these reffs should go back to basics and learn a thing or two about what reffing really means......i mean come on ducking and cowering in the heat of a major fire fight????? when they should be looking out for the safety of the players around them.......ya know what grow a set and do your job for the safety of others.........i'd gladly take fire from a barrage of players in order to shield a player who has called themselves out.....not just stand off to the side........that's dedication to the job that i was taught

Jeremy, The Marshals are usually referees, but we were on the playing list for Fall Castle. We'll be back to ref in the spring. There are very few "Walk on" referees at EMR. Those that are, are usually paired up with an experienced ref while they are being trained.

Darthmag99 my previous post was by no means aimed towards the Albany Marshalls and their abilities to referee.....i have also been a ref and have reffed Spring Castle for 3 years now and also played the last 3 Fall Castles I still see a need for improvment......maybe EMR should have more than one set day for referee training....some people that want to learn to better themselves training wise just aren't able to make it to the training day due to scheduling conflicts......i'm in talks with Taylor "Sprinkles" now about the next Referee Training day.....i was not able to come up last year to assist in the training again due to my scheduling problem.....
I mean don't get me wrong "on the job" training is good.....BUT not during a major event like a Castle Conquest.....open play or private outings sure

Pairing up is good but the only down side it you now have to watch the inexperienced ref on top of the safety and general gameplay.... Hands down training should NEVER be done at major events

oh... like the ref for defenders chrono, that had his mask off on the field . luckily only myself and one other guy were out there at that time and both had guns facing the ground.

Now that I have some time to elaborate...

I found that the refs were where they needed to be when they needed to be there, were assertive enough to enforce the rules yet not in any way aggressive, knew the rules better than I did, and were able to answer my questions about them.

The staffing was, all-around, spectacular. It's just too bad I wasn't able to shoot anybody.

Jeremy, I didnt take anything towards my team, I was just pointing out that we will be back in the spring to ref. Unfortunatley as a referee, you come to realize that not everyone is going to walk away happy. Its the referees job to make sure things are fair, and one persons definition of fair is different from the next persons. All we can do is be assertive, stick to our guns on calls, utilize our best judgement.

Nice meeting some of the faces and people behind the digital names here on the nation..

I was MadPoohs friend and mystery guy hanging around the PBN tent

We came up together and were lacking in our rest of our normal crew so I paired up with the PBN guys.

Great times great times... even if MP tried to eat his race way

i don't know how long EMR has been doing this (player referees) but it was definitely a good idea especially during fall castle.....i had to pull a player from the defenders side for a "dead man's walk", sadly when i took the player to the "actual" refs i was given the look of "who do you think you are" from both refs....after showing my card to the refs i told them "well obviously someone who actually read and understands the rules".....now granted i'm not saying it is all necessarily these refs fault....there is a saying to best say how i feel about this situation....."attitude reflexs leadership".....all i know for a fact is there were at least 4 first time refs on the field that saturday and it comes back to needing proper training or at least experience to handle certain situations that can happen during a big scenario

I have always discouraged Player reffs. The reason is that a player ref is not impartial to the game. Often times player refs make calls based on whats good for them personally or for their team. Also I have seen too many player refs calling guys out that they are shooting at.

The most common argument for player refs is Safety. I agree that safety is the most important issue, however players should all be aware and working toward a safe enviornment, and one does not need "player ref" authority to tell another player to put his goggles back on, or use a barrell bag.

In the case where fields use a player referee, that player ref should only be able to police his OWN team, and only for safety issues.

generally theres only a few player refs allowed. It also depends on how many refs are on the field, if theres enough and theres refs that want to play they then can get the player ref card. I know taylor had been a player ref i believe twice this year. I feel they should have more then just a card on a lanyard, perhaps a jersey that says it.. or special armbands or something. I think it comes in handy, especially when or if in a area where theres no ref present at the time being or not enough in a zone.

I know if i see a person with a hit and their still playing im going to let them know even if on the other team, im gonna fight my way to that person and if i get shot out. once im hit im going to still make my way to that player to point out that theyre out also.
