Recon/Sniper teams I want your input...

So being out of work I'm completely bored most of the time, so I've been kicking around the idea of making a TRUE custom recon/sniper rifle, and having only played as a recon guy a few times I though I'd get input from the real deal. My idea is to make something that is truly functional, and not just a traccer/phantom/whatever stuffed into a rifle stock. So my requirements that I have so far:
  • Semiautomatic (lets be realistic,as fun as cycling a bolt is, sometimes you need the extra firepower to get out of sticky situations)
  • Will fire primarily first strike rounds, but also accept PBs
  • Will accept spring loaded mags that carry 10-15 rounds a piece
  • fully mechanical
  • utilize a balance spool (like a shocker) for ultimate smoothness
  • either a barrel "rain guard" or rear facing porting/sound redirection device (much like on the barretts
  • designed for compressed air

things I'd really like to get feedback on:
  • Optics. I won't be putting anything with magnification on it, but red dots and such could be useful?
  • Bipods...worth it or needed?
  • air efficiency. I'm assuming not a big deal
  • weight an issue?

I'm looking for any and all suggestions, but I don't want to hear anyone bickering about the validity of snipers in paintball.

I would have to say that your shopping list sounds very appealing. I'll try my best to give you my opinion on your short list first and then I'll throw some extra suggestions in.

Optics: I actually think an Eotech knockoff would be best. But a side mount for a 2X monocular/non-reticled scope would be nice. Having something that I can get a peek at something with but not be using it for aiming would come in handy.

A bipod is nice to have.

Shots per fill don't really matter a whole lot as long as the marker is consistent. Big part of accuracy.

Yes, weight is an issue. But that's strictly an opinion thing. I never saw the benefit of putting 12 lbs of stuff on my marker just for looks. I'll be carrying that marker for hours. Lightweight is good.

When looking at design for magazines, look at a spiral feed drum if it would work with your original idea. The new Tiberius FS marker is an example of how a stick magazine will interfere with ergonomics when exceeding 5 round capacity. Drums can be short and stubby and pack more rounds.

The stock, look at check weld. An extra adjustable weld piece would help get the lense off of the stock when aiming. Maybe a foam pad to double sided tape to the inside of the mask? So there is a truly solid cheek weld.

To be honest with you, a magazine fed DM3 with the most consistent regulator available would be the perfect place to start. You will NOT find a smoother shooting marker made.

a 2-4x magnified scope would actually work pretty well with first strikes. but if youre going to have any magnifications, youre going to need something like this http://www.hustlepaintball.com/Tiber...aver-Picatinny a scope or red dot sight is usless without one for paintball use. and unless you really want to make a custom marker, you might as well get a t9.1, its probably the same price or cheaper as a custom marker, and is already proven to work.

guaranteed it'll be cheaper for me to make one. Plus it's more fun that way, and I can get much better quality out of it than any mass produced marker.

Tiberius makes a great marker, but the 14" magazine discouraged me from investing my money into it.

Well the mag design I have right now is about 5" long and holds 10 FS rounds + 3 to 4 in the "feedneck".

Tiberius T4 First Strike Marker

That to me looks about 14" give or take an inch or two.
That bipod needs to be fully extended to even be used. Say goodbye to prone shooting.

ok, so after a long hiatus, I'm back on this project. With the release of the new DYE DAM magazines, I think I've finally overcome my greatest challenge, the feed mechanism.

I've been playing around with a mechanical shocker engine for a while now, and it's just not reliable enough for this use. I love the idea of a balanced spool, but think I'm switching to an automag valve. It's proven, reliable and consistent right out of the box.

So with the use of the DYE mags, I know there was a bit of controversy over the ergonomics of the longer mags. And while I know dye makes a 10 and a 20 rd mag, lets be honest, it'd be nice to be able to use the larger mag all the time. So what about a bullpup style marker. With the mag closer to your shoulder, you shouldn't have as much of an issue. Plus I don't think anyone will complain about a more compact marker.

thoughts?

Here is what I'm running for recon missions this I.O.N.

Empire V3 mini, boss bolt, CP rake trigger, Shockwave, On/off ASA
Dye I4 - easy breathe mask
V-max hopper
45/4500 tank

Paintball pants with camo long sleeve
Blue tooth earpiece

I'm planing to try to blend in a headquarters and leave behind prepaid phones tied into conference call lines for $20 a phone. Leaving them on speaker phone.

The marker needs to be small, light, low kick, quiet, and have a hopper that doesn't run non-stop and give away your position (like the Dye rotor). I carry a aluminum 45-3000 as a backup in my remote line pod pack. I also have a smal book bag with...

- 2 waters
- 1 bag of paint (500 shots)
- rags wrapped around frozen bottle water
- tee shirt and pants to change into
Packed tight so it it doesn't make as much noise.

I carry a small set of binoculars that I've never used. Usually I sit still 20 feet in cover off roads and pick off 3 to 4 guys at a time. If its a big group, I let them pass and sit tight. I'll even hide under cover and report to a person on the other end of the blue tooth conference call in.

There's a lot of good mech ion builds floating around, or you could spend a little for the gog enmey. These would be inexpensive. Ion's are especially great for hacking up because parts are readily available and cheap. You could probably get by with unscrewing the ion breach a 1/2 turn, which would point the feedneck down for your mag feed.

Good luck, I miss the days when players would customize markers like this.

I'm not customizeing, I'm building from scratch. the ion/emny would be easy to use, but then I need an additional regulator. using the mag valve eliminates that.

if i did they would be preorder only and customized per the customer's request/needs.

Also, got the DYE mags in hand and I have started the CAD work. I'm currently building a new (and much larger than my current) CNC mill to make quick work of the fab work.

it won't resemble anything. this is purely a function > form idea. If i get the design done and can make it look like something, great, but that's a secondary.
