Sorry if this has been answered before, but I checked haveblue and it said that the tap drill for Autococker threads is 15/16 minus about 50 thousandths. This seems a tad large to me, as I thought the hole for threads should be about 75% of the tap size. So what is the actual size of bit i would need to drill a hole for a 15/16-20 tap?

Actually the thread is larger than 15/16-20 because of annodizing.

Im getting a dm7 that has stripped eyes covers....any ideas what size tap and die I would need to get them re-threaded?

also I was told to look into using a helicoil, would that be a better option?

I dont know if this is the correct spot to post, if not please be gentle im new. I have a very custom painted Geo that I really want to be more then a paperweight. It got droped and where the barrel screws in now has a flat spot instead of being completly round. The first thread is kinda fubared. What is the best way to take out the dent and fix the threads?

Helicoil is the best option, but requires some skill. it also depends on how much material around the thread is available.

sooo, just talked to YDNA,

SP used a .784" dia for the female threads of an Ion thread feedneck. what's reported here is apparently corrrect for the male though.

You mean 0.812"-32 is correct for male ION threads? How does that work with 0.784"-32 female threads?

I'm just assuming that the idea is for friction to hold the two together.

Well DUH! Isn't that how all threads work?

But seriously, there is a discrepancy of 0.028" in there. While that might not seem like much, when talking about threads you might just as well be talking about trying to squeeze a watermelon into a hole made for cantaloupe.

I'mma going to get Andy in here to confirm this.

Straight from my email

They used to call it 13/16-32, but the outside diameter of the feedneck is slightly smaller (usually 0.807-0.808). If you want the published specs on that, check this link here
http://www.efunda.com/designstandard...148&finish=227
(be careful with that website, they limit the number of times you can visit a page per day, so if you surf around too much they will lock you out for a few hours....)

Anyway the theoretical size that SP uses for their female threads on the bodies was 0.784" diameter. I don't know the tolerance for it but it was probably 0.002 or less. Later when they moved to the "NXT" feedneck threads, they were also 32 threads-per-inch but the diameter was increased by about 0.060. Pretty pointless in my opinion, since a threaded feedneck is a threaded feedneck. Making it bigger didn't change much.

I once had a tap for the feedneck but I quickly wore it out by tapping the threads by hand. The custom tap cost around $100 for two of them (I had to grind one of them down into a "bottoming" tap so I could actually finish the threads). The real way to do it is via threadmill but that's not something that anyone can do so easily....

hey andy, just wondering if you happen to know the thread for the Ion feedneck.

Yeah Efunda has sizing based off of the basic. Careful with the actual tolerance ranges. There is very little point in using those unless you need to deal with thread shear.

10-32 and the other fitting is actually smaller. I think 8-32.
