DVD geek talk:

Matty's speech on the hill screwed me up. It happened at a spot in the movie that would've been perfect for a layer break. But I couldn't put it there for obvious reasons, so I had to put it earlier. That meant there was some space left on Layer 0 that limited the space on Layer 1 for bonus material.

The upshot is: there's a bonus piece that didn't make it on the DVD and the bonus that did make it has a low bit rate (could've looked a bit better). All because Matty won't shut up.

I was wondering exactly how layers worked, and how it's setup through programming cause I've had times where I've wanted to burn DVD's that were longer than 60 minutes but haven't bothered getting Dual-Layers yet...

All I know it's at like 4.7 gigs which is typically 60 minutes of videoage

Haha... oh well... I hope my copy gets here thursday...

I'm a nub w/ this DVD stuff...

Yeah that's what I was kind of hinting at a little. The behind the scenes clip I watched started to show some compression artifacts and that's when I realized the movie length might have pushed for a tighter constraint on space. I thought the opening DVD titles were seamless though. Great separations and no noticeable loop or break that I could see on a first pass.

That's all Patrick. He actually made that all into one video clip so it would display seamlessly. All of his menus are well done. Even the super critical artists I work with were impressed with the art direction on everything with this DVD. They love the book, the packaging, the menus, everything.

Seriously, if Patrick could just learn to love paintball a little less, he could make a very decent living for himself in the mainstream like I do. That's what makes us so lucky... someone like Patrick giving so much back to this sport we all love.

Truth to that.

The more folks I meet on the creative side of paintball, the more you realize that their contribution can't be taken for granted.

Wow, this was a great film. As a player, my team is on top of our game right now, but we did not get there with out struggle, this is what the movie is all about. To me, it puts the whole paintball life into the perspective of others. Without struggle there is no success, let that be known by all who dont know it.

Monkey with a gun. This movie has been a pleasure to watch. As for the guys in it, your story is inspiring.

Great film...i see xsv almost every weekend and havent seen or known of this side of them...i thot thomas was a bum(wut i was told) who jus hung out at the store...but the guy was a firefighter.. def mad props... but on the other hand, the thing that i loved most about this movie is that you dont have to like or know xsv to get it, it relates to anyone and it shows that while we look at the scores and say our "they're doing good" or "they're doing bad" the team itself has millions of other things running through their minds and this film helped expose those thoughts and actions that you normally dont see...

I have a ridiculous amount to say about this film...

It's going to be a ****ing essay.

Literally the second the package was on my doorstep, I ripped it open and stuck it in my TV... and sat down... with headphones... and watched the entire thing start to finish...

I'm editing my own video as we speak

I promised I'd have it done by tomorrow so I'll be up all night (literally... no sleep) working on it.

I've been talking w/ Pat about films since Sunday Drivers... doubt he'd remember me though it was just **** through email.

I noticed the compression in the extras, that sucked... get bigger DVD's!

Some screenshots... they look like **** compared to the full-res video... $900 HD Camera

It's not all the compression. Patrick also didn't spend months color correcting and fixing the video. We wanted the "rough cut" look to it so it would feel like cutting room floor stuff. The video was already pretty chewy by the time we encoded it, and it was still a somewhat respectable 4 to 5-ish bitrate. The one I regret the most was Tony Reyes' behind the scenes featurette. I wanted to make that one really look nice, but it is what it is. The feature was our primary concern, and I challenge you to find any encoding artifacts there. My buddy Frank is a ****ing professional, and he is as exacting and perfectionist as Patrick when it comes to compressing video.

Don, don't get yourself banned, Ed

Haha... I can still point out some flaws in the technical aspect But that's for later...

Watching the extras section vs. the film section (same exact shot, the Rich 1 for 1) you could see a lot of artifacting/compression... nothing like what the film looked like.

The film itself looked amazing... not denying that...

I'm just saying, I don't think it would have been that much more trouble to just have a "bonus" DVD... leave the Full Auto and Sponsors on the main DVD, but bump the other stuff to another DVD and add extras...

Most feature films do that now... Monsters Inc. did it didn't they

I just got it in the mail today, and within 5 minutes after walking in the house, I was on my couch watching it. First thought: unbelievable. I guess I have never realized how much goes into playing professional paintball. It was amazing to me to be able to know learn so much about a team in a film like that. (I also got a little excited when I saw Cuba I believe, put on the exact same MWAG shirt I have )

Major to MWAG for stepping outside the traditional box for paintball films and showing what really makes a pro team, just that, professional.

Can't wait to see what you guys are bringing to the table next!

I wouldn't expect everyone to like it... It's not Cereal Killers... it's not DerDer... it's nothing that's been done before...

People don't like different... atleast not all the time...
