I would have taken the reviews as sage advice and enrolled in a different course. It's not just "liberal" hate speech which does it, I've had the "neocon" hate speech professors too --although in lesser numbers.
College professors are generally liberal towards the lives of others, but conservative with their own. It's pretty common. Power trips are more likely the case. Every bull **** liberal arts course I had to take during my degree had some radical feminist teaching it. Everything was about phallic influence and how minorities and women were always oppressed. These people would drag themselves through broken glass to argue their agenda.
