Correct- Friday at Nationals is technically the 4th event of the Class A season. (Usually 2 in Spring, 1 in Fall + Nationals). The idea was that due tot he costs of Class A we could merge Nationals and Event 4 of Class A together at nationals and just run it the day before.
We had also been looking for a way to make an open Class A event for non season teams to compete in and get a chance to play Class A and even prove their stuff at nationals. So the original idea was to run two separate Class A events on Friday at Nationals. Well at the time the teams made It well known that they would rather just toss everyone into one event Friday. This let the non-season teams get to see how they would do against season teams (a large concern if the season teams were kept separate). It also gave us a chance to reduce the cost to non-season teams.
Hence how Friday was born.
While some teams complained that they did very well at Friday and went 2-1 where as conference teams moved on going 1-2 remember that Class A is all about repeatability and longevity. If we had chosen who moved on based on just one event then we might as well have chosen the first event as the last event. This would have left teams like Army (who after their first season event was 0-3) out of the running, even though they proved to be a worthy team for Saturday.
The non-conference teams that show up Friday are playing only between themselves for two wild card slots into Saturday, yes they may play conference teams for those spots, but the scores they get are only compared to other non-conference teams for who gets to move on.
As for 3rd and 4th, the general feeling over the years has been not to play for 3rd and 4th, it saves costs and time. Plus we always have someone cramped for time to get on flights Sunday as it is (heck we had to cancel the finals match between Drexel and Purdue back in 2004 due to flights)
