The Army was considering the HK XM8... I'm sure a mere upper receiver for an M4 (the 416) would be much more widely accepted.

bnctaj exactly why on earth would you spend 1500 bucks per rifle to replace when you can get a new upper for 500 or get the piston conversion for like 350

Actually, if they really wanted to, it would only cost $3,427,047,000.
(About $3.4 billion for those who don't feel like counting numbers lol).

That's not that bad for the military is it?

Also, that is assuming that everyone single 416 cost exactly 1500 and that is also for every single active duty personnel and reserve
(Give or take a few people probably) for every branch of the military, including Coast Guard.

Yeah, they can be reconfigured. But I would like to think I could pick up anyone else's weapon and be able to fire it if I had to. Also, Ranger MOUT techniques involve being able to shoot with both hands around corners, which I could see as a problem with bullpups.

Maybe some of you 'gun guys' know, but I think you can actually convert an existing M4 upper to a gas piston system by changing out the gas tube and bolt carrier group.. maybe a kit like this:

Only thing I would invest in if you're going to Iraq is a nice pair of shades and optics for your rifle

Wait, you actually bought your own rifle optics? wtf kind of crap are you guys getting issued? I have had ACOGs, eotechs, and aimpoints since I came in, which I think are all first rate.

heh... In 'O3 I was handed a bare bones M16A2 right before I deployed. I didn't have to pay for optics on my M4.

I have a friend in the Marine Corps. Evidently they aren't issued optics period

Only Rangers do this? I would think if you're average paintballer could learn this then why wouldn't they teach it across the board?

No, pretty much everyone does (or should). Rangers generally develop the MOUT battle drills and methods that go into the manuals used Army-wide. When I was a weapons instructor I found a lot of guys to be really reluctant about shooting off-hand.. there was like some mental block they had where they couldn't even hit a target at 25M. Stress shooting is a skill you have to learn through repetition.

yes we are.

I have an ACOG on my M16A4, and the SAWs all have eotechs.

..if you're an admin POG, then maybe not.... but most all combat units have optics.

you dont always want a carbine this has been discovered in every war since the 19th century

a rifle is going to be more accurate than a carbine

if you are fighting in the open shooting at 500 meter why would you want a carbine with a collapsable stock that is more likely to shift or have a wobbel which alters your npo(natural point of aim) or your cheek weld which will change your accuracy

the m4 is a great weapon but its place is an urban environment open ground warfare (yes i know it is becomging a thing of the past)

M4s are for NCO's Officers, some other people and then POG's the M16A4 is SUPPOSED to be the new standard assault rifle, but dont tell that to the army....
