For those who want to rifle their barrel there's an easy way use thin car trims. It works great cause it also holds your nerfs inside your barrel.

Yes using a small ribbon or string helps keep tail stable , you loose about 15' in distance but if using a havoc , you can mod a pin sight to practice with and guage distance,
I use pizza boxes at different heights and distance to practice hitting.
