Tuning your DP spool for best effiency (lowest dwell)

I was watching a video on YouTube and found a nice guide for tuning a Mac Dev GT (or any spool valve gun) for lowest dwell in order to get the best efficiency.

A lot of people always ask what their dwell should be set to with a Techt Bolt. Most of you want the best efficiency. Watch this video to see how it is done by starting at a higher dwell and dropping it 1ms at a time over a crono.

the link should take you to 7:27 in the video. If it does not, just skip over to the 7min and 27sec mark.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sla7W...ilpage#t=44 7

SKIP TO 7MIN and 27 Seconds

Tuning Dwell

For the DP guns I like to start at 14ms dwell, crono my gun to 300fps and then drop the dwell 1ms at a time. Get an average reading each time until the FPS drops dramatically or when your consistency is bad. Once this happens, raise your dwell up by 1ms.

Tuning ABS dwell

The next step is figuring out your ABS dwell. ABS is the amount of dwell added to the first shot to prevent first shot drop off. Usually 12-14ms does not require ABS to be turned on but if you are in the 8-10ms range, you may find that your first shot is low. Assuming you have a fresh battery and proper grease on your bolt, youl want to set the abs to 1ms and test for first shot drop off. Let the gun sit for about 10-15min. If FSDO still persist, raise the ABS setting by 1ms. Do this until the first shot is shooting fine. Also, make sure to check the first shot over a crono to make sure it does not spike in velocity due to the increase in dwell for the first shot.

Tuning Bolt Return (APE boards only)

Bolt return is a setting on the APE boards that takes alot of people by surprise.

Quote:
You got me thinking so I had to go look it up. You almost have it. It is literally the time after a shot is initiated (trigger pull activated) that it waits looking for the bolt to return past the eyes. If the bolt doesn't make it back past the eyes before time is up, it faults because there is something (bolt or broken paint) blocking the eyes..
This setting can usually be left at 20-25ms (stock) without causing issues. Its will not smooth out your shot as it has no control on the actual speed of the bolt. Some people like to tune their bolt return very low (10-15ms). This is fine but if you run into random chopping issues, consider increasing your bolt return or eye delay settings. You gain next to nothing from tuning the bolt return lower. You might find that you need to lower the bolt return or eye delay to get max BPS but the stock settings for Eye Delay, Bolt return and Dwell is more than enough to shoot 15+ bps.

The only reason I include Bolt Return in this thread is because alot of people think it has a direct effect on the speed of the bolt during its return stroke. The fact of the matter is that you cannot electronically control the speed of a bolt. Pressure from the solenoid is what will determine cycling speed.

Things to note

Oring fitment will usually determine if you will have FSDO and how low you can reliable run your dwell without running into inconsistency or bolt stick. Orings that have been broken in usually allow the bolt to slide more freely and in turn will act better at a lower dwell. If you find that you can not get lower than 10-11ms of dwell do not freak out. Shoot a few cases through the gun and check again and see if you can do 8-9ms of dwell. 10ms is usually the sweet spot for a broken in Techt bolt anyways and will provide smooth shooting with great efficiency.

The next best thing you can do is keep a fresh battery in your gun along with some good lube on the bolt and solenoid. A noid that does not cycle constantly because of bad grease or a bad battery will make your results less than par.

Greases used by most of the DP community
  • Lurker Lube
  • Gun Sav (Techt)
  • Violent Grease
  • Dye Grease
  • Monkey Poo
  • Slick Honey

Other greases will work too but if you are ordering new, try to grab one of those.

This guide can be used for pretty much any spool and even poppets. The fusion having a spring to return the ram might not be as dramatic as a normal poppet however.

No slick honey? great job fox. In addtion to the bolt return. If youre getting eye fault amd stilll want to set your bolt return dwell low. Turn your eye setting to "standard" instead of "ifault".

The forum needs a general maintenance and tuning section. As this guide really works for any gun It could go any where. New player help?

I don't think so at all. I think the people in here can "police" themselves quite well actually. Besides, it is not up to a mod to clean up the stickies. That can be done by anyone who is willing to put the time and effort into it.

I'm not saying we need someone who watches us all the time.
