New consoles anytime soon?

So like, when is the next gen coming out? They seem to be showing their age IMO.

I think the 360 is halfway done with it's lifespan.

Don't worry, we have Kinect.

As a whole, there isn't much game-wise that impresses me anymore.

Which I don't think will happen until a new generation. But I don't see that happening within the next 2 years.

Yeah me neither, but seeing as how consoles are a good 5-6 years behind the curve thats not suprising. Sucks that we have to suffer for it.

Regarding the 360, games do look a whole lot better than the release titles but they're all rendered at sub 720p resolution. There is still a lot they can do with the console but it's going to fall on the shoulders of developers to optimize their games.

What else is there left for consoles. I honestly think if they havent hit their ceiling now, they will for sure in the next generation. We have 1080p games with amazing graphics, online access, we can stream movies from netflix for ****'s sake. Motion capability with the wii, kinnect, and move for ps3. There are also games with 3D capabliity just coming out now, EX: Gran Turismo 5.

What is left for consoles now?

Well graphics can always obviously be improved. And the majority of games are not rendered in full 1080p anyways, so a push towards doing such would be a big improvement. And the 3D thing has yet to even be touched upon, save for a handful of titles which have lazily tacked it on.

Graphics-wise, PC will always be ahead of the curve. I think it will fall on consoles to integrate the full range of motion controls and interactivity, something that PC cannot do (if not due to lack of fanbase).

Consoles have a lot of life left in them. As we know them, maybe not, but the next iteration of them is sure to still have a lot of life to it.

Or perhaps I'm just expecting too much from the money hungry dick-****s that run the gaming industry (*cough*EA*cough*). But 3D with full motion interactivity really is the next step. Then probably full virtual reality after that.

Our current gen of consoles can't even handle Crysis, a game that came out 3 years ago.

Crytec said that Crysis 2will basically push the 360 to its limits. They say it will look 10-15% better than any game on the console now, but that is it is as good as anything on the console is able to look due to the power of the current gen consoles.

right now its up to the developers to catch up with consoles. They all have about a 5 year lifespan left.

Ehhh people still play old consoles. Some of the best games are older games anyway

Plus we all know when the next Sony console comes out, its gonna be like $800

I'd say 3 years, max. It's been 5 years now...seven is a pretty damn long time for technology to change. I just wish I knew what they were planning.
Like someone stated earlier, it'd be nice to see 1080p games with games made for 3D and the Kinect.
It'd be cool to play CoD where you actually controlled your character by moving your body. You could peak around corners, crouch, etc.

This.

I think I've stated this in another thread already, but I'll say it again. Now that motion sensing tech is considered the norm, it's time to tweak it to the point where any casual gamer can sit down and enjoy a game with enhanced motion control without feeling like they're getting a workout. Kinect is pretty damn close to that but I still feel as if there is still too much "motion" in the "control". Not everyone wants to wave their arms around to play a game, but the benefit of human dexterity vs. tactile response is much needed. Shooters especially.

I think he's more pointing out the potential to what games could and should be on consoles, seeing as there are 5 year old PC games that our current gen can't even match in terms of power.

Yeah, power isn't everything, but the ability to not only polish a game for sheer beauty purposes, but also in terms of more advanced AI and more things on screen at once is a huge plus. There's always a limit in the balance towards how well things can look and react at the same time.

Mainly, I want my my hundreds of highly detailed zombies on screen at once, dammit.

For a developer to bring CoD into fruition on a quasi-kinect device would call for a much different game. If it were to happen, it would be something very casual. I can't see it being anything like the CoD we play today. People just don't want to use motion controls for hours on end. That's why the vast majority of motion controlled games are casual. You won't see an entire generation of consoles exclusively dedicated to kinect like motion controls for at least 2 more gens.
