Carbon can actually be quite ductile depending on the weave orientation and resin used. Look at the 787s wings. They are entirely carbon, but watch them bend under flight. It's amazing to watch.

Either way, if your barrel broke from dropping it, you better ask for a new one, as it was made poorly.

I think this is a really awesome design idea. Just like with a car the carbon is going to help speed, handling, and weight.

it won't. I actually just ordered more material to make another body. This projects is going slow, but i WILL have a leak free, hand made, carbon marker someday

also updated the first page to account for the 3.0 failure...

Is there a particular reason you're not just machining this then either doing the final sheet for looks or just using a hard epoxy for the oring gland surfaces? I've seen machined CF a lot in the motorcycle stunt/racing scene.

1# cost. getting a piece of graphite the size of a marker body is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$+ a bit more $$$$$$

2# pressed graphite has no grain orientation so it's not nearly as strong as woven or stranded carbon

3# huge mess! machining that stuff is pretty toxic to breath and it gets EVERYWHERE. It's really bad for the sliding surfaces of my machines as well as the lead screws.

BUT, I am going to try using graphite sheets to make the support material between the air transfer tubes this time, so I will be machining a little chunk of it.

Isn't powdered graphite a really good lubricant?

Zoltek makes some pultruded (yes that's the right word) profiles that would make a decent starting point. I haven't priced it in a while, but I'm sure it's not cheap. I am not a machinist so I obviously have no first hand experience cutting the stuff on a mill, but I used to do a lot for cars (by hand) and we'd use a carbide burr to cut the stuff and it worked reasonably well. We'd also use basically a tile cutter setup with water to keep the fiber in check.

This thread has made my day at work so much more enjoyable. I laughed, I cried, I cursed at the slipperiness of Delrin. It was quite a rollercoaster.
