I would think in general, endurance, speed and agility types of workouts would be the most beneficial to paintball.

You would be looking at cardiovascular stuff like running and swimming for endurance.

On the speed and agility side would be plyometric workouts, which are usually best designed by a trainer who can monitor you. These exercises are designed to build explosive power and quick muscle action; jumping, throwing, footwork, taking off from a crouching position , etc.

Don't forget about strength training. It doesn't need to be the focus of your program, but balance is important. You are not trying to bulk up, but keep in mind that any increase in strength is usually accompanied by an increase in muscle mass. Generally lower weight, higher rep lifting would be prescribed.

If you have any other questions I will help where I can, but as always, confer with a professional (doctor, trainer, therapist) as appropriate.

That book looks good. I tried to find it at Borders and Barnes and Noble this morning, but it looks like I will have to order it.

Lots of plyometric stuff in there I am sure.

Good buck. The author also has a two-page article in the October 2004 issues of Paintball 2Xtremes. The focus is more on speed and endurance, rather than strength.

I just run, alot. I have a friend who is a track runner and professional paintball player, so he helps me out with training.

I personally do alot of weights. All over, upper body, core, and lower. Strong legs make you quick, a strong core enables you to do all the crazy **** paintball players do, and upper body is for the ladies, just kidding. You mostly want strong legs, good endurance, and lots of core strength.

Okay I'm a sport freak and I've read numerous books so please take in account what I suggest.

Endurance- You're not going to be running a marathon so jogging isn't needed, but you should use it as a warmup.
1) Start from breakpoint, run to first bunker and slide/dive in, then move to your next bunker slide/dive in, and do this all the way down the field. This will help you build endurance and simultaneously train your bunker approach sliding/diving technique. Then when you get good at this, do it with someone shooting at you and try to take a path where he can't hit you. That will help you learn the correct path to a bunker where you avoid as much paint as possible.

Strength- lift in 4 sets, 2 sets x3-5 reps, 2 sets x18-20 reps....you need to build explosive strength and muscular endurance

Torso- basically you'll need abs for balance and obliques for snapshooting

1) crunches
2) back bridge as long as possible
3) lay down in situp position...touch your toes with your hands moving from side to side
4) lay down...feet straight up in air...touch your toes
5) medicine ball workous
4) side bends

If those don't do it for you, try the Lord Manimal workout.

Start by hefting a bag of cheetos onto your lap in the sitting or lying down position.

Next, select one of the smaller sized cheetos to start, and begin by bringing it to your pie hole and crunching.

Repeat, increasing the size of the cheeto until bag is empty.

What I have my team do:
-Stretch!! (daily)
-sprints with breaks as mentioned above are great
-"pops" drills- with full gearand your gun in your hands, with arms out straight in front of you, with feet about shoulder width apart squat and then pop back up, jumping and not just using your legs, but even popping off your toes. may sound funny, but you'll notice a difference next time you have to make a quick bump from a laydown, or other low bunker to another.
-practice snap shooting when you're bored at your house (couches make good "bunkers")
-pratice running and shooting (I recommend in your house, otherwise neighbors get kinda scared)
