When to Buy? now or after WC

I've been out of paintball for over two years now and desperately want to get back into some tourney play. I have never owned a DM but always told myself that when I got back into paintball I wouldn't settle so I want a matrix bad. I want to get the most bang for my buck, basically the newest gun I can for the cheapest. Would I be better off buying an up'd dm7 or dm8 now, or wait til World Cup in hopes the DM9's will go down substantially (and by how much)? Im in college and I need to conserve my funds, while still buying a whole new setup again. Should I be patient? Do you think it would be worth the wait? cause I don't know how much longer I can go without buying something...

I'd get a nice working 6 or 7, since they're relatively cheap and the guns haven't gotten significantly smaller after that. I got to use a 9 over the weekend and while it shot great, it didn't shoot better or feel more compact than the 6.

Get a 7. Everything after the DM7 are just minor adjustments.

Don't listen to these fools talking about the DM6 for one reason alone:

The eyes.

DM6 and DM7 eye protectors (in the breech) are very different, and the DM7 wins out big-time. I've owned both the 6 and the 7, and the 7 is, as the guy above me said, "pure butter".

Tried the DM9 that convinced me to join the DM family
Currently enjoying my 7 at the moment... wasnt too impressed by my friends DM8 after I compared it to my DM7 (not by owner's pride either), obviouse difference between the DM9 and my 7 is the weight (minor), Hyper3 and the eye cover & pipe, which I didnt think the extra $$$ was worth spending for a noob like me

But if $$ is not a concern, get the 9... it still a great marker, or wait and see when WC arrives, and what new toys may appear

Here's a post I made in a different thread when a kid asked about if a DM9 was a worthwhile upgrade from an UL'd PM7. I think it will help you some.

If you are asking if its worth it that's really up to you to decide. Most things have been covered already in this thread. I've owned a PM5, two PM7's, a PM8, DM6, DM7 and a Dm9. They all shoot really nice, super smooth and quiet. Now is the DM9 worth it? The price is on the verge of dropping a few hundred as the DM10 and NT10 is coming out in a month. Do the DM's shoot smoother than PM's? Yes, slightly.

Lets try to stay as objective as possible here:

We'll start at what you get in a DM9 that you don't have in your PM7. The biggest, noticeable difference would have been the UL frame but you already said you have one.

Some people would ignorantly say that you get a better board with the DM9, however the stock UL boards are the same with a few changes made for the current years ROF rules. The boards don't offer different or more firing modes or options. So that is yet another mute point.

Now one thing that the DM's have over the PM7 that you might not have upgraded is that they come with wired eyes instead of the ribbon eyes that comes stock on the PM7. Some people have had problems ripping their ribbon eyes but I personally never had a problem with that.

One thing I liked about the PM7, along with the rest of the PM's, is that it had no on/off built into the body. The DM9 was the first of the DM line to have no on/off so if you were to go with DM9 that would be an easy transition. There's nothing wrong with the on/off's on the DM line except that they just add more o-rings that can cause leaks because you have to keep turning it. It's an easy fix with a flow plug.

The DM9 has a lever clamping feedneck which is easier to use than the thumbscrew feedneck that comes on the PM7.

The DM9 has an eye-pipe that allows for self-cleaning eyes which the PM7 doesn't have. This is convenient if you have a chop, which is very rare these days, or if you have paint in your hopper that drips into your breech.

Starting with the DM8 the DM line stopped having eye covers, which is a questionable move as it makes gaining access to the eyes harder and more inconvenient when and if you needed access to them.

The biggest difference you will notice between the two guns, besides the milling, will be that the DM9 has an Operating Pressure, OP, of 145 psi versus the PM7 OP of 185 psi. This contributes to the DM's characteristic smooth quiet shot.

One other difference between your PM7 and DM9 would be the stock triggers. The DM9 comes with the reach trigger which allows you to adjust the angle of your trigger. Whether that is an upgrade is for you to decide as triggers tend to be a very personal thing.

So in conclusion the big differences between your PM7 and a DM9 would be:
OP pressure
Self Cleaning Eyes
Wired-eyes
No eye-covers
Lever Clamping feedneck
Reach trigger

Now are the differences worth it that's for you to decide.

From a personal perspective having owned, used, and teched numerous matrices, yes that is the plural form of matrix, there is a noticeable difference between the shot of the PM and the DM line. Now the difference between the shots of the different years of the DM line is debatable. So if you are debating "upgrading" from a PM7 to a DM9 and but are hesitant because of the price I would say go with an earlier model DM. Personally i believe the DM7 is the best of the DM line so far.

Here is my rationale explanation:
Having shot and tuned the DM6, DM7, DM8, and DM9 I can honestly say that the difference between the feel of their shots are very negligible. As long as they are all tuned correctly they will shoot essentially the same. Keep in mind that all the DM's have the same OP. That having been said lets go into why the DM7, in my opinion is the best DM.

DM6: ~$300-350
The DM6 saw the introduction of a few features now standard on DM's. It was the first to come stock with an UL frame. It was also DYE's first try with a self-cleaning eye system. They used plastic inserts that sat in front of the eyes, which some ppl had problems with.

DM7:~$400-450
In the DM7 DYE perfected their self-cleaning eye system with the eye-pipe. The DM7 was also the first DM to come with a lever clamping feedneck.

DM8:~$500-600
The DM8 was heavier than the DM7. It was the first DM to not have any eye covers. This is a problem when you need access to your eyes, you have to go through the feedneck. The DM8 also saw the sue of magnetic detents that a lot of people had problems with. This is easily fixed with the DM9 eye-pipe. First DM with the Hyper 3 regulator, which some would argue is not really an upgrade.

DM9: ~$850-1000
The DM9 was nice in that it finally saw the removal of the on/off, an easy fix on the earlier models with the installation of a continuous flow plug. The DM9 fixed the detent problems of the DM8 by using a rubber detent ring system. Once again DYE did not install eye covers for the DM9 which, like the DM8 makes it a pain the butt if you need to work on your eyes. That being said the DM9 is the lightest DM to date by a few ounces if that's important to you.

So in summary the reason why I see the DM7 as being the best option is:
PRICE
Eye covers
Eye-pipe/detents that work

I know this post is super long but I hope that helps. Tried giving you, and others interested, an actual breakdown of differences between the PM and DM line and between DMs instead of the usual "this is better than that" nonsense people post purely based on what they read or newer year of marker.

Even though it seems like every around here thinks the DM7 is very comparable to the DM9, i think im gonna wait it out and see how far down the price falls the closer it gets to WC. I dont want to regret not getting a newer one in a month or so if the price drops. I rather wait and have the resale value stay closer to what i paid for the marker for a while and i think i can if i wait a tiny bit more.
