It's a radar detector, not a cop detector. This is the #1 complain people have and it's because of their negligence to learn how detectors actually work.

Oh okay, that actually cleared it up a lot for me.
And I never said I knew much about radars. That's why I came to this thread.
What would be the best way to "detect cops"?

Umm, eyes.

Learn to read traffic flow and watch for a sudden slowing of traffic or brakes ahead. Check sides of the road for visual places a cop could hide well at and whtanot.

Keep in mind, if running a radar detector and you see a cop but it's not beeping, they're not running radar. Of course, they can turn it on which is the only thing that can really get you with a good radar set up. Learning to pace someone who has a nice lead on you can pretty much stop this as you'd pick up anyone doing this when they read them and you can slow down.

Just had my first encounter with radar. No radar jammers (yet, hopefully). Was following a rabbit pretty close because of traffic and they threw on the brakes and I did aswell right when the 9500ix started going off. Was on the phone not paying as much attention and was like shiit.

Guys, you realize that if the officer is running in standby mode your detector can't detect the radar because there is no radar to detect. Once he sees you (so you should be able to see him unless he's unmarked) and he makes his determination that you are speeding, he flips the radar on. Once the beam hits your car and he locks it in (quicker than it takes to read this) the detector lets you know "Hey Speedy, get ready to pull over." Detectors are only good for running in a pack or if the cop is "trolling" a hot spot listening for a good tone. If he's trolling and you slow down he still wins because he slowed you down. Writing tickets is only part of the show. Just be careful.

Depends on the radar. Many don't have that feature. What they do have is pop mode which runs a very low frequency then goes full blast to pick someone up. Good detectors can detect this. Also, in many places, an officer cannot issue a ticket based on pop detection alone. I'd have to go digging to find that piece of information again.

If you're running at 50 over everywhere you go without a rabbit, you deserve a ticket. Also, most cops just sit down, take a nap, and leave their radar on and let that ***** wake them up. I can almost count on it. And cops around this small town are lazy as **** and I've not run into laser a single time.l

TLDR: Be smart about speeding.

I'm not a SME on all radars as each state has to certify what radars they will allow to be used in that state. Each state is different in how many hours they train their officers in radar. Some require a few hours and some over forty plus time behind the unit. Lidar is different beast. A lazy cop trolling with his/her unit constant on looking for good tone is easy for someone to detect but how many speeders have detectors? What about a unmanned stationary unit for data collection? It still gets 90% of the speeders and lets the officers know where and when to target. We've lost over a dozen kids in five years to speed related traffic fatalities in this county alone. I worked one two years ago where a kid on a bike slammed into a motor vehicle. He was going an estimated 134 mph. Yeah, cops have "magic numbers" for speeders so you're golden for speeding up to a certain level. For every ticket I write I warn three. Plus I can check your DMV history and determine what I'm dealing with. CAD even shows how many times you've been stopped in the last few years and why. Some here speed and I understand that. I'm not going to take anything personal as we're all guilty of bending the speed law from time to time but I just want guys and girls to be responsible out on the roads and not think that a detector gives them carte blanche to drive like they're invincible because they're not. Like I said, be careful.

And most of us don't. Most people who run a decent set up, however, are the kind of attentative drivers who pay attention to things around them and are ready for things to happen. Just look at some of the detector forums and you'll see what I'm talking about. There is definitely a correlation there.

Myself, well, I don't even really speed that often. I mostly have a detector for my back road runs and for that occasion where I feel like down shifting and having fun for a second. I honestly go the speed limit or under most of the time for mileage reasons.

Yes.

I have similar model to the walmart one that I got off of Amazon. Saved me from at least 4 tickets in the past 3 months.
