New Player with a couple questions

Hey everyone! So I just went paintballing about a month ago and loved it! So I just bought a Tippmann A5 with response trigger. Very excited to get out and use it. I was curious. I know most of the fields nearby say "Field Paint only". My understanding is that this means you must purchase the paint there? So your never allowed to just buy it online and take it? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the game
Well when they say field paint only, they literally mean FPO. So u can't order online but if it's bring your own paint then you can. Many field have a certain paint they use and they only use that paint.

Okay thanks... It's probably more cost effective to just buy it in a case right? If I purchase a case and don't use it all does that mean I can't return another day with the leftovers?

Well it matters. If you use more than two bags of paint, just get a case. And yes you can use the leftovers the next time you go.

Usually, yes, but just to be safe you might want to ask.
I've only run across one field that didn't let you bring their own paint back another day and that was many years ago.

I have not come across a field that didnt let you use their paint on later trips since about 1999. haha. i would venture to say that 99.9% of fields allow you to use paint purchased there previously.

Okay thanks you guys. Also I was looking into getting an HPA tank. From what I have been reading its better to purchase the 4500 ones? Also I have looked into the48ci, 68ci, and the 70. What would be suggested?

When I purchase the paint is there a certain one you guys recommend using?

most popular is the 68/4500

I would love a 45/48-4500 just due to the fact they are so small

Okay... Sorry this probably is answered somewhere on the forum, but how many shots would a 45 fire vs the 68?

It Depends greatly on the marker, but a5s are gas hogs, never having owned one i cant really give you a solid number of pods. But If you are say taller than 5 feet 7 inches i would go with a 68, the reason being is if you dont like it the resale on 68s isnt effected as much as other tanks.

FPO has been covered, you've got to buy and use their paint exclusively. Paint is usually a field's main money maker, so it's no surprise that they're trying to keep some of that money "in house" so to speak. Don't base your entire impression of a field solely on paint pricing either, higher paint prices can sometimes translate to a superior facility since a place that's charging more can also spend more for maintenance, upkeep, expansion and employees.

For a Tippmann you're going to want at least a 68/4500 tank, so that's a good starting point. Buy a quality tank, that way it will last you for years and years to come. It's definitely not something to try and go cheap on.

Paint wise, most places will have a selection of low, medium and high grade stuff, it's probably best to buy the highest grade you are comfortable paying for. If they have several options, try them all and see if there's one that you really like. It may turn out that you're happy shooting the cheapest stuff, or you may want to step up to something a bit more pricey, at the end of the day it's your money.

My local field usually stocks Kee/Empire branded paint, and it shoots fairly well for recball/practice. We also tried out some Valken recently, and I felt that it was compared nicely. It's still low-end paint, so there are going to be a few "flyers" that veer of target, and some shots that bounce instead of break, but that's (unfortunately) just the way it is at this point.

I agree with Coenen, 68/45 tank as a minumum.

and as he says, some field offer different levels of paint, the two FPO fields by me only offer one paint.

Marbalizzer, ($90) but it's not really marbs, thicker shell, but still shoots straight,
And the other is Private branded DXS hybrid between silver and bronze ($85), and sometimes it's just a little two brittle for the rotor.

Wow thank you guys for all the help. Very informative. I'm going this weekend. Don't know that I'll have a new tank by then though!

Wow. I think paintballs are like 55 bucks at the field I've gone to. Will I notice a huge difference in a 68/3000 vs a 68/4500?? I just don't know about investing so much.

you'll notice a huge weight difference, 3000psi tanks are usually aluminum while the 4500's are carbon fiber making them very light weight, also the extra 1500 psi (as most companies will tell you) adds 50% more air capacity. Go on ebay and look around, if any cf tanks are out of hydro, rehydros cost like 25 bucks.

Buy a nice 68/4500 now and you may never need another tank, or you could skimp and buy a 68/3000 now, and then end up buying a 4500 tank later.

The extra air capacity and lightness of a fiber wrapped 4500 tank is well worth it. Also, a nice 68/4500 will retain some value on the used equipment market if you need to sell. Conversely, a steel or aluminum tank, or even a 3000psi carbon fiber tank, will be a very tough sell unless you are practically giving it away. At least with a quality 68/45 you stand to get a good chunk of that initial investment back.
