Best car for around $5500

Right now I have my Monte, but it need new tires and the alternator is going out in it. There's also alot of small cosmetic things that really bug the **** out of me about it. My parents gave me the option of letting my younger brother buy it out from me, so I can get something that is deffinately going to last me through college.

So I'm gonna be going off to college in the fall of 2k5, so I need to have the car payed off by then. I've already decided it's gonna need to be some kind of import just due to the fact that they pretty much last forever. I also really don't want some bucket that's not gonna accelerate for crap or handle for crap.

Right now I'm looking to spend about $5500 because that is a number that I'm sure I can have payed off by the middle of next summer so I can put some money away to buy some Ramen noodles for college.

Right now I haven't really had a chance to look around too much, but one car that's caught my eye for quite some time is the Nissan 240SX SE. I've looked around, and there's a really nice on in Minnesota for sale for like $3300, which will leave some money for other stuff, and it already has some minor performance and visual upgrades (intake, windo tint, sweet agg ninja huge wing /sarcasm, and custom paint).

Most of the thread's I've seen have been like "I've got 20K what's a good car" nothing really in this low of a price range.

200sx SE-R, I got mine for just over $4,000. 50,xxx miles, no problems, 150 horsepower stock, upgraded suspension, and if you put an extra $700 towards it for I/H/E adv. timing, you can expext over 200 hp, enough to smoke most of the stuff on the street. Just my thoughts.

Maxima. That's what I have, it has 97,000 miles on it and it still runs like brand new. The VQ30DE V6 has amazing low-end torque. Fourth generation Maximas can hit 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and a quarter in the high 14's low 15's. Not only is it quick but it's pretty good on gas and like I mentioned earlier they'll last a long time. Nissan makes great cars, I am looking to sell mine but that's just cause I want something smaller. If you like Nissans but maybe you want a sedan, yet you don't want to sacrifice any kind of horsepower...then get the Maxima. They're great cars.

ehh thats not that quick. not bad either way though. In that price range I think you have to look at each car on an individual basis. It seems to me as though there would be a variety of cars in that range, just pic the one you like the best and runs the best.

ive got a 240sx, it came with full suspension and vlsd, manual, s14 seats, enkei wheels with new tires, apexi N1, plenty of other ****. cost 2400.

im buying a sr20det sometime in the future, with a frontmount will cost about 3200 if i install myself.

with slicks, i will be running high 12's, without doing anything to the engine besides turning up the boost.

the prices of these cars are dropping. you can get one with the sr20det in it for like 5k if you look, with plenty of extras. try 240sxclub.com/forums, they have a good classified section.

only other car i would trade mine for that is equal value right now is a z28 camaro (4th gen) with a 6spd

the price of the cars is actually rising. the 240 is gaining more and more popularity as a car as drifting becomes more widespread as it is an easy car to drift......

if ur in an area where you get alot of snow do not get a 240 as they are plain horrible in snow

I have an Infiniti I30, which is basically just a glorified Maxima (along with "luxury car" on the insurance bill...). I second the Maxima, great bang for the buck, fairly low insurance relative to everything else, lots of room, good gas mileage, comfortable ride, decent handling, reliable, low price, and the engine is pretty powerful compared to the others in its class.

I know a lot of other cars offer what the Maxima has, and they are good choices too, but the Maxima, as others have said, has good low end torque.

To sum up...Maxima.

Yeah, I know it's no STi or S2000 but it's still darn fast compared to most other cars that are typically tuned (Civics, Integra's, Accords).

On a side note, can someone tell me what "DE" means on the Nissan engine codes? I get that for example, on an SR20DET the 20 means 2.0L of displacement and the "T" means turbo. Same with a VQ30DE, it's 3.0L of displacement and whatnot. But I don't really know what any of the other letters represent. Right now I just say the "VQ" means Very Quick.
