This Thread got too big to continue so I made a new thread to continue the step by step! https://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=2254225

here is the reference I did some editing to it in photoshop and painter
Alright I finally got everything that I needed. I overnight shipped a 24x36board cause I didn't want to wait until next week to start it. The media that I am going to be using is rembrandt and pitt pastels and holbein airbrush colors.
keep in mind that this is just a basic outline of the drawing. I always do an outline with a grid like system so that I can establish the object shape. Now that I am done with the outline I will start laying done colors tommorrow.
I started some color tonight.
18 hours
I worked on it alot today mostly just fine detail. I haven't worked on it as much as I should of mostly because the halo 3 beta has been taking up alot of my time
right now I have only used pastels, I have not used any airbrush tones or acylic paint. Those will come in at a later date, and when they do it will look much better!

getting more and more detail. the mask is about 70% done.
today I used alot of prismacolor pencils and dabs of white acylic paint to bring it to life. I still haven't used the airbrush yet, I am going to do that last
It took me a long time to do those hands, layer upon layer upon layer upon layer....... anyway I think that they are looking nice. I still have some work on them but they are getting close.
I worked on it a little bit today, mostly fine detail. I am going to be moving to Wisconsin next week so that I can pursue my dream of being a full time artist. I also will be opening up the 4th liquidlead art studio there and teaching class. I am hoping to get alot worked on before I leave, and I am sure that I will because I get obsessed with my drawings. I also have another announcement.
I am setting up a vendors booth at the chicago PSP. I am going to be selling prints of my thomas taylor drawing and hopefully this one. come up and say hi to me!
I only got about 6 hours done this last week cause of the move and all and I would of posted this earlier but my computer was packed away.
Ok I went over the tone with the airbrush and it produced mixed results, the dark it made darker, which I like, but the light areas didn't seem to react to well to it. but that is okay, cause I can just go over it again with pastels and lighten them up. I am experimenting with different techniques and medias on this drawing and I have learned alot of things from going over it with the airbrush, I feel like I can control the saturation alot more now.
still haven't had much time to work on it with the move and all. I need to get the front hand detailed out, after that I will finish the gloves and either work on the jersey or start the big face part in the background.
just getting more and more detail. I am about 85% done with the hands and I am probably going to start on the face either wednesday or thursday.
55 hours
because this is in color alot ot the suttle changes will be in color. so the transition between steps will not be a big as it was with my liquidlead thomas taylor drawing. Also getting details with pastels is really time consuming.
I am going to start on the big face tonight
I started on the face last night and have been working on it alot today. It is just in its beggining stages, There is still alot that I need to do before it is Nicky, however I am happy with its beggining stage. Skin tone is one of the hardest things to capture in art.

I decided to go ahead and lay down an acrylic wash on the board. it helps conserve pastels and it creates a smoother softer texture that I could not get with pastel alone.
keep in mind that this is just the base coat, there is alot more work that needs to be done. This drawing is by no means even half ways done.
Look at the ironmen shield on the nicky's chest and also the unfinished gun barrel, apparently my 3 yr old son thought that he wanted to do what his dad does and decided to lay some colors in. At first I was ready to kill the kid but then I noticed that he actually laid down some colors that are pretty close to what actually needed to be there and he did it in areas that were untouched. I was actually a little proud of the kid so I let him live. lol. anyway he did absolutely no damage to it at all.
I think that I have pretty much capture the right facial form, now I will go in an adjust the color so that it looks alot more realistic. My objective is to have the foreground figure really dynamic and detailed and the back ground figure will be softer more realistic looking. I am going to use the airbrush alot on the background figure, and I would of started today but unfortunately one of the colors that I needed got spilled in the move. I ordered some more paint on tuesday and according to ups tracking it should be here on monday.

I have been extremely busy getting ready for psp. I am going to try to have his face about 85-90% done at the tournament. It will be on display there.
I am starting to do some color matching during that I realize that there was alot of changes that I needed to do. I think that it looks more like nicky. When I lay down some colors with prismacolor it will make a big jump, just like it did between the 18-26 hour mark
wow! I just noticed that the face was really off while comparing the last update with this one. He looked like a monster. lol!! It is funny how color plays with your eyes.

I added prismacolor today to get some object shape established and darken the shadows. I need to work on the beard somemore and then I will hit it with the airbrush to saturate the shadows and smooth out the face
I layed down a light layer of airbrush tint on it to saturate the colors. This is what It is going to look like at Chicago PSP. I am going to be there tommorrow.
Well I am back from Chicago PSP, I gotta say that it was definately the happiest place on earth. I was great to meet you guys. I have learned somethings from my booth at PSP
1) Paintball players don't know and don't care about the difference between canvas and matte paper, all they want is a poster.
2) The Tournament players are broke cause they spend all their money on gear and guns.
3) The professionals are dirt broke.
The players that I have drawn, Thomas and Nicky, are going to get a percentage of the sales. So, basically if you buy a print you are helping feed them.
After seeing the pros play first hand my future drawings will be based less on specific players and more on action shots of the sport. I have made friends with with many photographers and they are going to give me the most badass pictures that they have.
I met about 3 players that are also artists that live close to me and want to take my classes, They will also be drawing paintball, so in the future you will see a huge explosion in paintball art.
I could go on and on but I think that is enough. Once again, I want to thank those that came to my booth
Thomas is now the owner of the original
I got to work a little bit on it during the show. I would say that I am about 60% done. There is alot more detail that I want to pull from this drawing. I will have the next update soon!
I started to work on the loader and background tonight. I feel like it is starting to come together
I am going to be out of town until sunday so there will be no updates until next week.
