I remember when I first came here, everyone said that it had a 90% failure rate and it took over 100,000 volts, just like you said. I figured it wasn't true cause i had seen the finish on lighters and knives and stuff, but good thing you put those rumors to rest.

I didnt read most of the thread but this effect is very similar to the effect you get from running voltage through Coke (Pepsi works too I guess or any other acidic liquid) and then on to Ti. The trick onto Ti only requires about 12v and its part of the actual surface, impossible to get off, especially because the material it makes is harder than the actual Ti, in other word crazy hard. I have no idea how they do this onto aluminum besides electroplate Ti onto the aluminum some how and then do the reaction I just talked about. Ti markers with crazy cool aurora that would never scratch anyone?

Well, thats not quite it. Titanium actually forms different oxides when exposed to different levels of current, so it changes color. So thats just anodizing titanium. Thats not quite whats going on here. Although that is pretty cool, I may have grabbed some scraps of Ti from the student shop to play with. I wish I still had them...


And there is a LOT of information on the process. Its just not called aurora.

wrong. PVD does not require placing any parts into an acidic bath and applying a current to them. Ti, has a different refractive index depending on the thickness of the Ti layer and by thickness I am talking on the order of nano-micro meters. Because of the difference in refractive index you see a different colors. Many different chemicals are used to supply the Ti, and the chemicals used will supply it in different proportions causing different thicknesses and in-turn the pretty colors.

That is how PVD works.


Also as mentioned by someone previously about electroplating Ti. The biggest issue with that is the face that Redox potential of Titanium is so much higher than Al that it makes it almost impossible to get a Ti layer on the outside of Al using electrochemistry.

This is easily solved. Just get all of your parts custom CNC'd out of Ti. It's easy!

Anyone got $20,000 or so?
