Well its not a matter or wether or not you are able to paint rubber its more of how to do it so that it will stay. Im sure there are some crazy expensive paints and techniques that will get the job done but its not commonly known on how to do it.

So I got a grill and painted it yellow. It looked great, but I got a little to excited and peeled the tape too soon and now they don't look so hot. Then I found out the stupid things come in yellow.... So I bought some pink and want to do that color instead. Can I just repaint over the yellow or do I need to strip the previous paint somehow? If I do have to strip them, what do I use?

I also had some issues with the automotive tape actually sticking to the mask. When you put the tape on, did you lay it over the indentation line and trim it back, or just put it next to line?

Thanks all.

I'm tempted to do this myself. I've got a reverse Olive pair, so some experimenting would be in order.

We'll see what happens.... :-)

Well, I stripped the paint using lacquer thinner. It was a VERY messy and long process. Eventually though 95% of the paint came off. I had a black grill, and had painted it yellow and after removing the paint it turned a interesting off greenish color. Kinda cool if that's what you were looking for. I"m going to repaint it his week and will post the outcome for all those wanting to re-paint their grills.

officially the sexiest grill yet

its pink... end of story. <3 I'm really proud of how it came out. The key really is in the taping. I didn't even use the fusion paint. I did however use automotive clear coat and I think that was the key.

Just to update you guys. I painted my grills with silver fusion paint (can be seen on the second page) and did not use primer or clear coat, that was 7-22-08. I have played many games with them and have even left fill out of monster balls on them which ate the mirror off the lens but the paint still looks as good as it did the day I painted them. The ONLY time I had the paint come off is when I was playing woods and hit a branch that was 6" around and almost knocked myself out lol. It just scuffed the very top edge in a 1/4" x 1/4" spot but it was easily fixed by spaying paint on a q-tip and touching it up. to kyrlon fusion paint.

Yeah, With the Krylon Fusion paint, you wont need a clearcoat, but with most others because they are not designed for plastics, I would recommend one. Just be careful of the paint bubbling.

(I know this is a PAINTING thread, but the subject of what to do with the 'bottoms' of grills has come up more than once)

I just dyed mine...
I used Royal Blue RIT and came up with a light blue that I'm really happy with.
Originally, I was thinking about painting the frame blue, but I didn't want to make them too close to Sharkills.

I was a little nervous about the shade, so I only had them in the dye for about an hour.
Originally aiming for a bit darker, as it's better to go lighter and dye again, than it is to go too dark and be SOL, but so far i really like them as is.

I can't wait to see them in the daylight
