Samsung LED vs Pansonic Viera Plasma
Back story:
-move out of the parents house in 2009
-2010 buy a 32" philips LCD. (looks like **** on SD tv, but good for gaming, not big enough)
-2011: buy a 42" 720P panasonic viera, happy with it, great for bluray and xbox 360, decent on SD tv, once again not big enough)
Present day: Decided I want a 50" with a nice stand, hoping to sell my 42" plasma to my friend for 300 dollars.
Cant decide if I want to go plasma again, I got hooked on plasmas ever since 5 years ago my parents bought a 50" panasonic viera. Never really liked LCDs that much, at least the cheap ones.
help me decide on either a 1080P samsung LED or 1080P panasonic viera plasma (either one will be 50")
Need some pros,cons, strengths,weaknesses...
I will mainly be using it for bluray, dvd, xbox 360, I cancellled digital cable, jerks were charging me 90 dollars a month for 80-90 SD channels. Crooks.

Cheap plasmas are better than cheap LCDs. I bought a ~$1400 46" C6300 Samsung LED LCD a couple years ago and it's nice, but it's not of the same quality as the ~$2800 Sony Bravia LCD in our family room that is about 4 years old.
Plasma technology is more mature and, at the price range I'm sure you're looking at, would be the better bet. Since you've had a plasma before, you already know that they are heavy, hot, power guzzling, and have reflective (glass) screens.

Price range? I bought 1200 or 1300 50" sharp aquos LCD. And I won a 46" LG LED I believe in a raffle recently. Ill let you know how the LG. looks once I set it up.
However the sharp has a great picture, good for gaming. I use it as my PC monitor as well. SD tv looks like SD tv, I just got Fios and the HD is clean and crisp. Although I don't really watch much tv as of late.

You really can't go wrong either way. Both have their pros and cons. In my opinion, plasma's are much better bang for your buck. I'm the kind of person that wants raw performance for my money. While LED's are great, I'm not going pay that much money for a TV that performs (arguably) just as good as a plasma half its price just because its thinner and is the newer technology. Plasma's tend get a bad rap for their cons that were very apparent in yesteryears, But almost all of their downfalls have been drastically minimized in recent years, making them excellent cheaper high performance TV's
I currently own a 40'' Sony XBR7 LCD that I got a super deal on. Which at the time that I bought it, it was a top of the line TV. It still has FANTASTIC picture, which I have calibrated properly and blows many of today's mid-top tv's away. However.... that is simply my opinion of it and many peoples may differ which brings me to my next point. Don't limit yourself to just 2 options. Go test some TV's at frys or bestbuy or something and see what is pleasing to your eye. Make the sales person give you the remote and take it out of torch mode to play with the settings.
That being said, In my opinion, the current best bang for your buck TV is probably the Panny Vierra ST50

Thanks for the info. I just hated that ghosty glow of the old LCDs, but you're right I'm going to go have to demo some TVs in person. Love plasmas, but about the prices, the viera and and samsung led prices are very comparable through thebrick.ca (tv/furniture store)

I got a 60" led from Samsung 2 years ago for 2800ish (properly calibrated) and it's a ****ing animal on blu ray. Regular HD channels are great same with gaming but if you are using it for SD media....eh.
From what i gather they sell the 55" Samsung LED's for cheap now. I love my tv so i would tell you to get one but i have no history with a Plasma so I cannot speak for them.

Well, you need to get more specific. Sure they have 2 similarly sized TV for around the same. Samsung probably has 6 TV's or so in the 55" LED class ranging from piss poor crap to the most beautiful thing you can imagine. You need to actualluy figure out which samsung model you are talking about, same goes for Panny. The point I was trying to make in my earlier post is generally speaking, for the money you can get a near top tier plasma screen for the price of a mid to lower tier LED.
On a side note. I've never heard of this "the brick", but that could just be that the area that I'm from doesn't have them. Make sure whoever you buy from, is an authorized dealer of whatever brand TV that you buy, and that your manufacturers warranty will be honored

Plasma 100%
the LED are so bright that they have terrible tone to the picture quality and should be toned down and calibrated (more than other tv's need it) as far as movies go.
They are also more expensive
Also unless you get the 240hz refresh rate a plasma will be better for gaming.
Plasma's on the other hand, while not as bright, have a realistic picture and better black levels (at least with the kyro chip in the panasonic), more similar to the movie theaters.
They also have 600 hz refresh rate (however its not measured the same was as an LCD or LED, but is better than 120 and on par or better than 240hz)

I own this!
Here's the down low. My last tv, which is at my parent's house, was a 42" Samsung plasma. I bought it at Best Buy because the color depth was amazing and the refresh rate is awesome for gaming.
Back in August I moved and bought a new Samsung 51" plamsa 3D smart tv which I mounted on the wall in my room. This thing is SeXy! Hell, it even has bluetooth. I play ps3 on it, I use the Smart feature to watch netflix, hbogo...this thing is awesome and you won't find a lower price tv with all these features, much less this quality. There just is no competition.
Edit: Price is $850 for those of you with linkophobia [Samsung PN51E550].

I have a Panasonic viera st30 (42"), and it has incredible picture after only slight modifications to the settings. They make the same model in 50", but I bought it almost a year ago. It has very nice picture compared to most LED's I have seen. The only reason I would go with LED is if your room is always sunlit, because plasma's seem to struggle with light reflection(s) more. But, darks are much darker, and color accuracy is excellent.
