my small planted tank is getting maimed by snails right now and i cannot get assassin snails for a while (the LFS wont have them in for at least a month). i have bee shrimp in the tank so dwarf puffers are not a problem so i was wondering if i could try loaches.

so my question is will the loaches eat my shrimp? i want to try kuhli's but i am afraid even those little things will kill my shrimp

kuhli's will only eat the tiny *** babies and any other loach would eat the shrimp so fish really are not an option. i am just going to wait it out and get some assassin snails when they come in. i am not spending a **** load on shipping for 2 $5 snails (from liveaquaria that is, maybe ill get lucky on aquabid). i guess i could use it as an excuse to set up 30x30x30 cube tank and buy a bunch of plants off there...



LFS is supposedly getting a few widebar dats in this week. i might have to make an expensive, semi-impulsive purchase and have them grow out in my free 50 gal



edit: found an awesome deal on aquabid for 10 assassins w/ free shipping. its more than i need but i can find homes for them in my various tanks.

anyone have experience with a red tail black shark?

i can't seem to get a definitive answer on possible tank mates for him.

i'm pretty positive my cory cats will be fine, but i doubt my school of neon tetra will be happy.

any suggestions?

red tails are fine so long as you avoid other shark-like species. they are very aggressive towards their own kind.


what size tank is it going in? they get kind of large (6 inches) so keep that in mind

I have a 60 gallon, I believe it's considered a high.

That's actually the exact one we were looking at haha.

Every setup has pros/cons, and the only experience I have with saltwater is helping my old man set up/care for a 200 gallon tank. What can I expect, in terms of differences, between a 200 gal and, say, a 12 gallon?

Not to scare you away from it, but smaller tanks are a lot more delicate to changes in the water chemistry. You'll have to be diligent with water changes. You'll also want to have a decent amount of rock but still leave enough room for the fish to swim around.

What kind of stock were you thinking of keeping? Any corals?

Probably no corals to begin with, there's a place near the house that has beautiful fiji rock at a good price, so probably just live rock and some fish to begin with. As for fish, probably damsels and goby to start with. Once it's more established possibly something different.

Meh. Regardless of the temperament, they're fantastic starter fish for a new tank.

Chromis are better, won't have any problems adding other fish.

What do you mean by less time? Less time spent cycling? I wouldn't recommend skimping on the cycling time.

If you do a nano and have the space, you can use a sump to increase the total water volume of the system and have more filtration at the same time.
