well, it's kind of a wash from the business side. if you can build a brand and a following, self-publication is nice, but you have to be really active. however, the traditional publication houses that i would like to relay on are going buh-bye, mostly from amazon's war against it, but also combined with the factors like self-publication. the leading thought is that most of the big authors will start to form their own publication houses, and a lot of small houses will spring up that will focus on particular genres and probably provide finer-tooth combs, especially nice for people in more...esoterically inhabited fields (ahem...)
i guess the overall progression could be good, but for now, i just want the houses
p.s. there are over 10 million self-publications available right now. there are more self-published pieces than there are readers

90% of agents won't accept a manuscript unless it's shown success or you're willing to set up a fund.
self publishing has gotten my book to the point where I have three offers and sold over 2,000 copies. i was against it, and tried for a year to get it into a reputable companies hands. but doing it all this way, got me there much faster and cheaper, even with the same amount of effort.
