You could do everything right and have no customers and lose money. Having all those things doesn't guarantee a penny of profit.
You need to be in an area where you will bring in customers. You need to figure out how many paying customers you will need to get in to cover your costs and make money.
Right now the indusry is slow and a lot of stores have closed.

Good luck opening a new store, and hitting it big. A lot of players like going to a store where they know people, and can get a decent deal on what they need. To be successful at a store you need to know what products will move effectivley in your area. this kind of thing takes a lot of time. Owning/operating a paintball store is not a path for those who are in it for the instant full pockets. You will spend a LOT, and i mean a LOT of your time and money just to get your store up and running. Plus the advertising costs to get the store name out. The majority of paintball stores have a field backing them. The owner makes paint profits, and his players come to his store to buy their gear. Paintball sales overall are declininhg for some reason this year, good luck with your adventure in the business world

I agree with both of the above reply's, It has been very slow here also. It's been slow for the last two month's. I made only $200.00 last month after all the bill's, such as emploee wage's health ben. rent, pge, phone etc. I have been in this bussiness for 8year's there are time's I feel like closing or selling out.

We run stores because we want to...not because it makes a lot of money.

These are the things that attract players (expecially me!)
Upgrades for my marker
be in a good location
have competitive pricing
And DEFINANTLY must have good paint/air prices.
Try and have a Tech in store as much as possible so they can fix guns on the spot if possible... who wants to wait a few days to get it fixed...

How about just opening a field? No store with markers for sale.... just a shack with balls and rental guns. Wouldn't even need electricity..... no I'm not kidding.

Ok, liscensing, insurance, price of land, structures, equipment, security, paint cost, advertising time/cost. Sure, your shack will be nice for a while. But you need to remember paint does not keep well with drastic weather, ( heat, extream cold) and if you have no electricity, and get some bad weather, kiss your money goodbye. Again, opening a field is still going to cost a lot of money, but does have the potential to gain a lot of profit. The way you go about it is up to you. We can only give you years of experience as input.

Thanks a ton for your help. The reason I said this was because I believe there is a field near me that does this. I think they keep their paint elsewhere and truck it in each morning. Saves them money or not, it's a good "thinking outside of the box" idea. That's what it takes to overcome the competition.
Oh, and in the area I was kinda looking at... the closet paintball field or shop is about 80 miles in any direction. Main reason I'm still even considering this....

Hmm.. so the majority say... No... Buutttt the owner of big paintball companies had to start somewhere ( i mean like , canadian paintball... (big canadian ones)) then for the US, Action Village... bradys, 888... It would have to be just paintball store (not planned anyways) it could be an Extreme Sports shop... Having skateboarding, paintball, inline skates, water sports, snowboarding/skiing.... and mabye field.... (i know you guys think i think its soooooooo easy but...) i know its hard but it has to be POSSIBLE...

^ Steak every night wouldn't be healthy, anyhow.
As has been said, the real trick of keeping a paintball business afloat (and that's your real concern, not how to spend your Benjamins) is in the willingness to spend hours of unpaid labor working on your venture. If you don't like to work, then "fahget about it". Personally, I love the feeling of having escaped the daily grind. I work for myself, and I like it that way, regardless of the money. If you don't feel the same way, then your path will be akin to climbing up a mud slide.
Have a good one.

My boss has been doing this for longer than most anybody else in this area. He started with the field about 15 or so years ago and now, after having moved said field twice(Waiting for the third move), he also has the largest store in the area(Try largest in three states, big states), an Indoor field next to the store and we opened a new field last month. No, he isn't eating steak every night, but he is comfortable. This isn't get rich quick, and in some cases, it isn't get rich at all. But it's a business that is in support of the greatest sport out there with the potential to reward you after YEARS of HARD work and EFFORT on your part.
Those online stores that were mentioned did start somewhere. If you could talk to the owners, they would probably tell you about how much time they put into the sites and whatnot. Or how much it cost them to have a guy design the site. And they would also mention all the other things that go with computer stuff for keeping them up and running as close to 24/7, 365 a year.
The basic point is that it takes work. No matter what direction you go in, what you choose to do, you need to apply yourself and work hard.

Instead of being a lawyer, go look into the Medical profession. Much more honorable, and not that much more school. Plus, there is always a demand for a doctor or nurse or whatever. You can go just about anywhere in the world and be able to work.
And I think what everybody has been saying isn't that there is not alot of money, but there is much more hard work than most people would think and you should not expect to get rich. Comfortable is better term. Maybe subcomfortable in some cases. But that is the same regarless of what business you choose to open and run.

If all you are looking to do is make money, paintball stores are not the "TV dinner" of wealth. To own a store you have to be in it for the love of the game and the satisfaction of providing customers with great service. Some times I wonder why I opened. Most of the time Im happy with the world I call Paintball.
