Why so much hate for Brave New World?

We have a copy of this book at my library, it's so bad that it's awesome. I highly recommend reading just because it's so damn funny.

Mine is Gandhi: His Life and Message for the world. But then again I've been fortunate enough not to read Jane Eyre and the other emotional chick reads.

I enjoyed Gatsby. I think it really captured the essence of the death of the roaring twenties(with Gatsby's death symbolizing it of course). But I hated Catcher in the Rye.

Both Gatsby and Catcher are decent books. Holden from Catcher was very annoying at times, how he acted and spoke, sometimes it struck a nerve. My least favorite book I have ever read was easily When Heaven and Earth Changed Places. Read it for school, it may be a good film, but i couldnt read the book.

(Idk if it actually has been made into a film, im just saying it might be better as a film, and not a boring *** book.)

At the time I absolutely hated Lord of the Flies. We had to read it in 10th grade and my retarded teacher completely ruined it for us. I'm sure if I read it now I would like it but I still don't know.

You won't. I read it two years ago. Hated it. But backed it up with reasons why. It's stupid, dry, and ****ing flat-out wrong.

Yes.Yes.Yes. Fagles' translation is beautiful just for that reason. Strange, it may be, but―I have the first line memorized in Fagles' translation and Greek (not that it's that hard to 'memorize'.).

Not sure about the accents, but

μήνιν ἄειδε, θεά, Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχίλληος,

It's translated that way because μήνιν means rage, but ἄειδε is the verb telling θεά (Muse/Goddess) to Sing about the rage of Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχίλληος (the Son of Peleus, Achilles).

So it's one of the more apparent issues we have with literary translation.

And second, μήνιν is pronounced manin (long a, as in tame), and it's feminine. The word isn't as cut throat as Rage. So, even though Fagle's translation is so much more gripping for it's opening line, it's kind of innaccurate. (you know, cuz it's Achilles' childish rage that costs lives and all.)

Our Town, followed ever-so-closely by Gatsby. Both of these books suck on a level that the movie Gigli could only hope to kinda-almost-maybe one day aspire to.

I don't read bad books.

If I can't appreciate and respect the authors work after about 5 chapters into the book then I do NOT continue reading it.

I really didn't like The Kite Runner.

I can't say I have read many books in my life that I though were worse.

I'm pretty sure its A Seperate Peace, but yes, there is clearly some homosexual undertones there. I didn't care for it either.
