Opsec
I hate to be a buzzkill, but I thought it was necessary to make this thread to remind our forum members currently on active duty status about operational security.
Basically, just remember that this is a public forum, and anybody can access the information that you post. Examples of things that should not be posted are:
-too much specific personal information (name and full unit)
-troop movement/deployment dates
-information about sensitive/new military equipment (i.e. "we just got these sick new infrared sights for our helicopters")
-recent pictures of U.S. military installation defensive points (i.e. the front gate of your FOB in Iraq).
-additionally, do not post any pics/videos of enemy, civilian or coalition wounded or dead. Current DOD policy states that "gore" images should not be kept or shared by military personnel.
You CAN post information about stuff that has already happened as long as it isn't classified on any level.
You may think this sounds silly, but believe it or not there is probably a room full of chinese intelligence officers that scour random websites all day looking for this kind of stuff. Just keep this in the back of your mind when posting in here guys

Please be really careful with dates and stuff like that. Indeed, it sounds silly, but even if CNN is broadcasting your movement to Iraq, unless you're a PAO, you don't need to do it.

This is something I think we should stress because even if you see it on the news, it doesn't mean that what the news has is correct.
I am sure that most of you know that there are departments that specialize in counter intel, where they alter information for press release.
So more than likely what you are seeing on the news isn't 100% correct.
(this post is more for the 'non'-military people.)

Cant have it both ways now. A few of you agree in this thread to this items, but then post that information in this thread.
https://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=2832646
The above link seems to counter a great many items on the list of things not to post. Mind you It dont bother me. I just want the group to agree before I close it.

If you have to think twice, don't post! Pretty simple.

I was just providing some general guidelines.. I'm not %100 sure of the regs, and of course I'm not on active duty anymore so it isn't really my place to try and enforce them. Posting a name and a posting isn't a big deal, but we should try to avoid specifics.
i.e., this would be appropriate
SGT Jones
1st Marine div/pendleton
USMC
0311 infantry
deployed in 2007 to Iraq at FOB whatever
But this would not be:
SGT Jones
bravo team/3rd sqd/2nd plt/D co 2-10 marines
deploying in dec 08 to FOB whatever for convoy security operations
kind of a fine line but you get the point.. people should use their own discretion.

I don't think that any information that's public knowledge is a breach of OPSEC. I can look on military.com and get everyone's name and duty stations, etc.. I just wouldn't post specific information like movements and stuff. I, personally, don't use my last name, but that's more of a personal thing than a OPSEC rule.

Since i have been forced to merge with PA... I know how it works in there field... pretty much when it comes to photos if you don't think your local PA office isn't going to release it. then don't post it..... like those battle damage photos. .. cough.. cough..
Not only are you not supposed to be taking photos of that, only official Military photographers are authorized to be taking photos of ANY government property damage. you shouldn't be posting it so publicly....
