Ok so i took all the parts out of my case and started transfering them to an old case i had laying around to give to my girlfriend, same psu, mobo, cpu ect. I plug everything in and swith the psu on and it trips the breaker on my ups. So i shut it off , recheck all my wires and try again and the psu sparks and dies. Wtf could have caused this if prior they were working fine in my case?

I know this is the building/upgrading thread, but I need a new laptop. I'm even more out of the loop on laptops then desktops.
Only reason I'm getting a new laptop is for my attempt at mobile PC repair. I have a laptop, but it's ancient and I can barely tolerate using it anymore.
What I need:
I'm just running various antivirus, diagnostic programs. Combofix, Malwarebytes pro, other good programs I need to test the customers computer/hard drive. I want at least 4 hours battery life. Nothing larger than 15.6". Could weigh 10 lbs for all I care. Doesn't run too hot preferably. At least a low end i3 dual core or AMD equivalent. 4gb or more of ram. Any traditional hard drive, I already have a OCZ SSD I might put in it, two hard drive spaces if within my budget. Just want to browse internet and maybe watch HD videos. That's all for entertainment purposes, not gaming on this. No HP laptops unless you can convince me otherwise.
Budget: $600 and under.

Get a toshiba with a 12-cell battery. Mine has an i5 and gets 8 hours on a charge.
Not to mention my parents have been using it for 8 months or so and it's still working. Which is amazing because they break **** constantly.

I'm looking at best buy, newegg, amazon, seems like they're all 6-cell to me.

Hmm... They were all over the place a couple years ago when I bought mine.. Not sure why they seem to have stopped.

Thanks for those that suggested studio monitors, but I just don't have the room on my desk. Maybe when I do a desk build... and have the room for studio monitors and a audiophile type of sound card, I'll get them for sure. I went for my previous choice since $71 savings just sounded good, and cheaper than the sennheiser headsets I was planning to get. I just couldn't justify spending $200 on headsets to use on a sound card designed for gaming.

How would a sound card be designed for gaming?

That's what all the reviews say on the Recon 3D Fatal1ty sound card. They say it's good for games but not so much with music... which is pretty much the same said on reviews for the SP2500 gaming audio speaker system... LOL...
Sounds like a good combo to me.

I recebtly recirved my gtx 550 ti but now i kinda wish i had gotten a better card. Dont get me wrong the card works great vut i juat wany something alot better. I usually stream so my fps drops a bit because nothing extreme but i want to be able to bf3 and skyrim on ulyra or high with frames up to 80-90 ish. Juat not sure if i ahould get the 670 or save some money and get the 570 series is the price gap worth the extra quality?

I don't really understand how a sound card can be good for gaming but not other stuff. Isn't the sound cards job just to process the sound as accurately as possible? Maybe they just mean it doesn't have an amplifier to drive higher end headphones or something. Pretty sure the device you're using to produce the sound has much more of an impact on quality than the processing device.

I've owned a 570 and now own a 670. With the 570 I could run BF3 on high at 1080p and had frame rates ranging from low 40's to low 60's depending on map. With my 670 I'm running every thing on ultra with a frame rate that is pretty steadily around 60. Occasionally I would get a dip into the mid 50's but it's not enough to notice.

That's what I was thinking.
I could see how the software included with a soundcard could be tailored towards gamers, but not the card itself, really.

There are a few "gaming" sound cards that'll work fine for both gaming and music playback and recording.
Generally, the higher end sound cards will work great for both. But they're not the ones usually marketed towards gaming. Like the Creative Titanium HD, ASUS ST, HT Omega, etc., gaming audio should sound great as well as music. Imo, it's not generally worth buying a sound card for gaming alone. In my case, my Titanium HD was free, so I had nothing to lose.
Here is what I would get if you're not too picky but still want something decent.

Or the Xonar D1? Not sure what the difference is.

What about Sony Vaios? I don't have any experience with them beyond messing around in stores but they look pretty nice.
