Anyone in here has any type of degree in photography and could give me some more advice?
A tad bit of advice.. try some freelance stuff before you drop money on an education in photography. I believe you've already done a little bit of it, but make sure that photography is something you're alright with calling "work" and not just a hobby. Not saying that I don't absolutely love shooting photo's/video's, but it is work for me now. It's no longer just fun/mess around.
Skateboarding is something else I really love, but I am absolutely not alright with calling it work. I skated for a skatepark and a local skate shop when I was in 8th grade, and even the smallest bit of responsibility and commitment made me hate skateboarding. Skateboarding and photography are two of my loves, but only photography is a potential career path for me.
I don't always give advice, but when I do, it's sometimes good advice.

Totally. If I re-arranged some of my lifestyle and changed some priorities I could start shooting as a full time gig. However, I enjoy photography and if I keep it a part time, low volume deal I can afford to take on the jobs I want, pass up on the ones I don't, and at the end of the day I still have a salary, benefits, and vacation time from a full time job in another industry. I don't have to worry about pulling in work to pay my bills, or taking on jobs that make me hate my hobby just to put food on the table. Zach Arias had some good stuff a while ago on the bad side of being a full time photographer, and it was a good eye-opener. It helped me realize a lot of things that I didn't think of before I got too far into making the blind jump into a full time business. I think it was in an interview with Chase Jarvis, who is one of the most inspiring people I've ever seen with regards to grabbing the bull by the horns and striking out on your own in a creative career. Good balance there.

I'm with Dave on this one as well. If you want to run your own outfit, get a business heavy major, which will help you substantially in your own ventures, and open doors for you in other industries should photography not work out for you. The last thing you want to be is a one trick pony, especially in a rocky economy.

Those are salary stats, and what you forget is how those jobs also rank on hours worked, stress levels, and dissatisfaction ranks. My field is salary and commission, which would be about same as what those stats say you're making.
evening everyone. just spent a very hot day at the race track. driving a 600hp race car to the track with no a/c, a very aggressive clutch, in 105* heat, in traffic, with very sqeeky race brake pads, for two hours each way wasn't exactly fun, but a good day at the track none the less. i should have a couple shots up later tonight.
i wish i could do this more often. yea, i got bored while waiting for our car to make it's way onto the track...
