What about an etek? As compared to the ego 11?

Eteks are basically older egos, the etek 4 has the same internals of an 08 ego. Also because of the significant price difference the egos come with alot more bells and whistles. I will point out that even though its older technology doesnt mean its any less reliable.

Yea, I use an ego 08 still today and I love the thing. Performance wise it is awesome, easy maintenance, and never breaks down on me.

Does anyone have any preference for hoppers? I am probably going to get the invert too or rotor.

What are the differences and which is better?

Is 1000 your budget for the main items of everything else?

If so consider this:

1. Mask- a good mask is essential but don't just drop cash on the most expensive mask on the market. See if you find a way to try them all first. This is important because you want a mask that fits YOU the best. That might not be the most expensive mask on the market. You want one that has anti-fog/dual pane lenses, which is generally any mask above 50-60 dollars. Just maker sure the mask is comfortable enough so that you don't want to take if off for long periods.

2. Loader- invert too and its variants will do just fine. Just don't go too low. Majors loaders: Rotor, Prophecy, Z2, Spire, pinokio etc. are all about preference once you get past 80-90 dollars. You might as well pick one out of a hat. Just don't pick the V-max for now as I've heard there are some quality issues.

3. Tank- Ninja 68/4500 if you're not sure what tank to pick. Standard size that is easy to sell in case you don't like it with some of the best CS in the industry. About 160-180.

4. Pod pack- as long as it's 4+3+2 or 4+5 to that extent, pick any you want. Just be sure to try them on as some might be smaller than advertised. Can range from 20-70 dollars.

5. Knee Pads- this is pretty important because in speed ball, you'll be on you're knees a lot. I've yet to find a pair of pants that can simulate the feeling of kneeling on good knee pads. Feels Like I could kneel forever and personally I would rather have a good pair of knee pads than pants. Again about 20-60 dollars.

6. Pants- While I would prefer good knee pads to pants, that doesn't mean a good pair isn't important. You'll be sliding all over the place in speed ball, so it's great to have a pair that will keep you comfortable and won't rip. Plus on some, they have nut protection. Cost about 100+ for a good pair.

7. Elbow pads- Speedball has snake bunkers and you're going to need these if you want to play that part of the field seriously. You'll be on your belly, so you want to protect your elbows as you make your way through the snake. 20-60 dollars.

8. Markers- Notice how I don't mention it at the beginning. That's because I don't want you to focus too much on it. Once you get to a certain range, even the most expensive markers are going to do little to your game. Sure they shoot better, but it's not gonna turn you into a pro just because you're shooting something that is 1300 vs say 500 or even 400. Being able to play at any angle/condition, will help you much better than any expensive gun could at the speedball field. What good is a expensive marker if you can't shoot it because you mask makes you feel uncomfortable (no good mask), if it chops/jams paint (no good loader), if it's causes firing issues (Co2 vs Hpa), can't kneel to make yourself smaller (no kneepads), can't slide into your next bunker for a better shot (no good pants) or can't play a certain part of the field like the snake (no good elbow pads).

With what's left of your budget, I would stick to something poppet from PE. They are practically maintainence free and since you're in highschool, it won't give you too many troubles. I personally don't like shooting them but I can't deny how idiot proof they are.

Couldnt agree more with that

I used an etha the first few practices and i was still taking out guys with ego11's, geo 2.1's, axes and even the random luxe. I learned really quick that guns dont make the player......not bragging too much but i was destroying the luxe guy with that etha lol.

So dont dwell on gun too much. I still have yet to own a gun, i've borrowed everybodys spare. I did pretty much what dak22 said and got all the other gear first, but come Jan or Feb i should have my own marker .

I understand that it's player over marker, but I want a marker that I won't need to adjust, or mess with much. I want a marker thats of the highest material and will not break.

My minds pretty much set on a new ego11. I am gonna also find a used etek or etha as a backup gun in case the ego11 breaks.

Hopper is still what I need to decide on. Invert too or rotor...idk...

if your deciding on a hopper you might want to read my last post. invert too is basically a slightly refined halo b. you can buy a used halo for like $30 in good shape, and a new pair of shells if need be and still come out cheaper than the invert too and have something nearly identical. just trying to help you get the most bang for your buck is all.

it all depends on how you want your profile. with the halo too its gonna be a little taller than the rotor. Also in a game if your hopper jams or has paint in the hopper, the rotor is a 3 second dismantle and the halo too would be pointless to try and take apart during a game. The newer rotors have a little shark fin underneath for clearing a jam if it ever occurs (most of the time people say its a jam but really they forgot to turn it on). The halo doesnt come with anything like that, you have to buy the rip drive seperately.

halo too has the rip drive, or at least i thought it did. most of the old halos did. you dont need to take it apart if it jams.

edit: yep, halo too has no rip drive. definately just get an old halo or a prophecy/z2 instead. or rotor, or spire.

WITH THAT SAID, some of the advice here is grossly horrible. I mean, they are fair suggestions, but a Geo2? Come on. Seriously?

Anywho, this may help answer MOST of your questions and help you find the rest out for yourself relatively quickly. Check out this thread:

It's ok if you don't trust it. After over 100,000 views and having it sticky'd (which can only be done by an admin of the forum) to the top of the beginner page, it seems to be holding its own and proving itself worthy for many people, not only on this forum.

Not sure how my wouldn't make sense. He commented saying the halo came with a rip drive and then 2 seconds later said edit nevermind it doesnt and continued on with what i've been telling the guy on the thread.

Also whats the issue with a Geo2? Oh and our advice has been "grossly horrible"? I'm pretty sure that's just bad grammar!

But thanks a bunch guy

Either way guys, I appreciate the help.

An ego11 and a dye rotor is the setup I have decided on.

I am still very confused on pods and pants/shirts, so any advice there would help?

What kind of clothes do paintballers where?

do you have a pod pack?

well since your not on a team YET, you can wear whatever you want. Any jersey or pants you want. If your just going out and playing you dont need a jersey. Ive gone out in just a t-shirt, elbow pads and pants before. its all what feels comfortable or what you think looks good.

What about padding? I mean does it hurt being hit in speedball?

like a chest protector? neck protector? slide shorts? elbow and forearm pads? knee pads? gloves?

id say the two essential are the elbow/forearm and knee pads. if you have good pants than slide shorts wont be needed. all the other stuff is really based on pain tolerance. speedball hurts just the same as woodsball. the paint will be flying just as fast. it might hurt less in fact if your using tournament paint lol.

So what kind of pain are we talking here?

And also, what are some better markers than the ego. In case my budget increases would something like the Geo 3 make sense?

have you played paintball before?

it depends, me personally i prefer poppets(ego) over spoolies(geo). I shot all spoolies prior to my last training when i shot my first ego and i immediately fell in love with it. but if you want to get the latest and greatest, from what im hearing around the rumor mill is eclipse is releasing a new poppet valve marker in January-February. i dont know if it'll be called an ego but its supposed to be amazing.
