How do I tell my parents that I want to step up my commitment to paintball?

tell him although you don't want to play football anymore, you are a competitive althete and would like to pursue a future in another sport (paintball).

Couldnt be any closer to my situation. I was a team captain and starting running back for my school team. i told my parents i'm not going to play football this year and want to play paintball more competitively. My parents will not get off my nuts about it. I just tell them that when i start getting paid for playing football i'll go back.

Idk but the football practice at my school was 4 hours long 4 nights a week and all we did was run and as it says in my sig Im in no shape to run 16 miles each practice then go home and the next day run 3 miles b4 practice a 225 lb 13-14 yr old can't do that for 4 months and be ok to play paintball on the weekends

So what you are basically saying is that you get so worn out by the football practices that you can't play paintball on weekends?

Why not just suck at football, and get benched by the coach. Then let your parents take you to play paintball, and do really well. Then you can explain to them how football isn't working out for you and paintball is more your calling. Make sure to tell them you are trying at football practice (even though you aren't, i doubt they will go watch a 4hr practice) but it just isn't going well and you don't think it (football) is the right fit for you and you are much more comfortable and do much better and feel more accepted when you play paintball.

Why don't you do stick with football and do your best. You'll get in shape and be even better at paintball on the weekends.

Truthfully, if paintball is one of those real commitments you have, you just need to suck it up a month before an event and just ask him.

He will probably moan and groan and not let you go (especially if fees accompany the event). Don't end the discussion if he says no though. Trying to get a yes out of one conversation with him is much better than constantly asking him in several. Eventually when you get the Yes, say you're going to get a job and come up with the fees. After that he has nothing else to provide but let you go.

If your dad is as dedicated as you say, and you're as dedicated as you say, your dad won't get over the fact that you don't like football as much as he does and you won't give in to your dad's excessive pressure.

Not making your dad or defining the epitome of dads as non-supporting brutes, but mine happens to be one. So I pretty much know what you're going through.

Just tell your dad you want to play paintball and go to events. He will grunt at you and possibly yell and be disappointed. Don't expect him to give you a big hug as violins play an F minor chord while he whispers into your ears that he accepts that you play paintball. That probably wont happen.

Tell him now, before this obsession and dream of his evolves into something flagrant.

Trust me on this, I have Asian parents, they're the worst kind.

Edit: Good luck though man, the fact that you want to confront your dad truly shows the dedication paintballers have. Suck in your gut before going into the living room and just let it all out in one breath.

Let us know how the confrontation goes.

By the way,
I'm a pitcher for my school's JV team and a Winger for my school's JV Rugby team.

I put emphasis on the fact that my parent's are Asian and would rather see me going to SAT prep courses instead of Baseball and Rugby practices. They discourage paintball especially because I can't put it on my resume.

i've sort of been through that, i'm 16, prolly like most guys...
my mom doesn't really like me playing but she knows i love it a lot.. she goes like"Paintball's not something that's gonna feed you for the rest of your life!!"but i'm like, so what, i still wanna play pro....you just gotta let your parents know you LOVE the sport, just like any of us do!!try to get them to see you play once or twice, i did that, and trully it sorta worked a bit...try that

Be careful if you stop playing football. My dad looks at me everyday and says "Man, I can't belive you never played football" It makes me feel like ****, then I get pissed.

well i went through the same thing in highschool i did wrestling and paintball i did wrestling for 3 years and paintball just became more important to me so I gave up wrestling for paintball for my senior year because practices where during the week for the team i was on i dont regret it because it was fun. but never forget that you only get to go to high school once in your life so take advantage of all the activity's you are able to do paintball will be with you as long as you want in your life.
