I've heard a lot of conflicting reports, but from what I've read paintball is not illegal in Japan, but owning a paintball marker IS. It's probably similar to Germany, except better enforced.

It's not so much that paintball is banned, but that Japan's strict anti-firearm laws make it a crime to own any device capable of launching a projectile at .989 Joules of impact energy. That works out to a muzzle velocity of around 177 fps for a .68 caliber paintball, not really enough to play a decent game at anything approaching normal ranges.

This is part of the reason why airsoft is so popular over there. Because the a little 3mm. Airsoft pellet has such a low mass, it can be shot at a much higher velocity without breaking the legal limit.

I've seen some pictures of paintball guns in Japan at tournaments, and it looked like they were shooting weird guns with MUCH smaller calibers, and probably at lower velocities as well.

Now, there ARE paintball fields in Japan, but I assume they have special rules and licenses that allow them to keep, say, totally normal Tippmann 98's and have no problems. Trouble is, no one can take the guns off the site, because as soon as they were off property they would be breaking a firearm rule.

I also want to say that US military personnel can own paintball markers on bases and there's been a couple fields on US bases over there, which are governed by different laws.

Like I said, this is what I've been able to deduce using the spotty info that's out there. I could be totally wrong on everything.

Picture from Apex's site of one of those Japanese guns. According to their site they were junk, and the field replaced them all with Tippmanns.

not sure about the firearms laws or any of that, but having personally had the displeasure of being over there for half a year- US military installations do have fields, and military personnel are permitted to have the markers ON BASE. however- one of my friends packed his cocker for our short hop over to korea and the customs guys were none-too-pleased. after that they made him check it at the armory.
as for the ****ty japanese markers, a lot of the markers over there come from korea. my 6 weeks in korea was fun- either they have no copyright laws, or nobody enforces them. the markers over there are exact clones of various SPYDER-esque markers and Tippmann 98s... only much much ****tier. all pieces of crap- but DIRT cheap.
and i'm on board with everyone else here, the huisori- SHENS

Law

If memory serves me:
Airsoft is legal in Japan and Paintball is not as far as ownership in public. I 'think' it has something to do with the size of the projectile coming from the gun. The mass of a paintball was to big thus making them illegal. Odd but I think that is how it went.

lol. i remember talking to a co-worker about it (he's from japan) he has an airsoft rifle, spring loaded, that shoots 400fps. apparently people mod the gas ones to shoot fast enough to destroy things like cars.

My point is that this guy's come up with one picture allegedly taken in Japan in 2007:

-The subject of the picture has red hair and is named "Alex"...

-The photo looks 10 years old and has scrub pines in the back...

-The hopper is a spraypainted 1/2gallon "Hood" milk carton...

-The gun looks like an old AlleyCat with an aftermarket reg...

-The picture was allegedly shot on the day it was posted?

If by "this guy" you mean me, the picture was taken directly from Apex Paintball's website. Don't take my word for it though, go look there yourself.

And it's definitely not an Alley Cat, or any other ICD blowback. I've seen guns like the one in the picture before and I'm pretty sure they're in .43 caliber and are unique to Japan.
