Investing in job
I think it's relevant to post here although it's not about direct investing, but rather indirect investment in term of career. After college, I want to go to grad school and although my degree is not directly practical in any job (philosophy), I want to get my masters in something more practical. I kind of want to my masters in philosophy, but at the same time I'm not a wealthy individual nor come from a wealthy family (like the majority of people) to afford this luxury. Although I know many philosophers do it for the love of the job, I'm not sure if I'm ready to make the sacrifice (being in my 30s with no career and college debt).
On the practical aspect, there are many master degrees that don't require any specific majors or that accept general humanities majors. I was wondering how you guys feel about the saying "if you love your job, you're never work a day in your life?" There are currently two jobs I'm looking into, both require routinely working after hours. One is more emotionally demanding, the other one is more stressful because of work load. The former pays about $20k less than the latter, but I think I would prefer working in the former.
Would you choose pay or personal interest in a job?

What are the actual jobs you are interested in?
Generally graduate programs like you to have 2-3 years work experience. Also most companies will pay for your graduate degree which would solve the whole debt thing.

Social work (lower paying job) and Urban and Regional planner (concentration on environmental planning and natural planning).
Social work does require some work esperience, so I'll need to volunteer or be an assistant for some years. But I didn't want to mention them, because I want people's opinion on whether a job you like is better than higher paying job.

I am not sure if this is relevant to your question but it could be.
Choose the job with better benefits, if there are any benefits involved.

Both are potentially governmental, so benefits are good.

I think money is def a factor that you have to consider, but you should always work in a job where you are motivated.

Here is a advantage that alot of people don't look at. I am working for a firm that pays 8K more than other firms in the industry for essentially the exact same job. However, when I signed on, I didn't know about the difference in some of the benefits. For example, one of the other firms that pays less is willing to pay for Grad School for you, while mine will only give an interest free loan. It is worth considering before you just take your job based on salary.

I there is is truth in this statement:
Take what you like to do, and find a way to make money with it.
Key being...."like". I wouldnt suggest making a passion into a career, because the fun appeal will be lost with time.

When I was looking for my job, considering the way the economy is going, you may also want to look at not only salary and benefits, but distance. Also the price of food and travel. Some people might say brown bag it to work, but that just depends on ur discipline to make lunch every morning haha.
If you're going with the job that pays more but have to travel twice as far or costs more to get tehre, it kinda balances out the salary range.
In your younger years you can pretty much just break your back making as much money as possible and later on get into something you find much more pleasing...by then your actual work experience alone will up your worth and still make you some pretty decent money
But 20k is a significant number nowadays
