There's certainly a purpose, you can do some basic land navigation with one and you know, tell time. You can get one for a tenth of the things you're looking at that'll do everything you could want and more.

can navigate with a watch? Anyway I don't care, I have nav in my car and on my phone (though iphone nav blows enormous dicks) and can tell time on my phone. If I buy a watch it will simply be for the sake of buying a nice watch and displaying my economic supremacy to those around me  |

I'd like to get my pilots license but the only plane I could really afford right now would be a single engine, and single engines terrify me to begin with, but I'd also be afraid to take it anywhere far.
