First ion - advice on replacing stock parts

Hey guys,

Just got my first ion. I worked on a buddy's ion over a year ago but that's about it.

I'm considering on keeping this as a loaner. However, I would like to upgrade some parts to make maintenance a bit easier. I hated having to disassemble the marker to get at the bolt.

I'm looking at the shocktech body for access to the bolt, getting a dovetail rail so I can use my spare ASA, and getting an autococker breech so I can use my barrels.

In your opinion is it worth dropping $100 in new parts into this or just keep it the way it is.
I got this ion insanely cheap.

Thanks!

Thing is, only you can decide what to do. Yes we can give you advice but that's where the fights begin. If you're only going to use it as a loaner, why spend money on it?

I see and totally understand. I don't want to start a flame war.
I am not looking for a particular brand upgrade, but if it was worth it.

Yes, it will be used as a loaner but I will be the one doing the maintenance and clean up after a day's play. I may even use it from time to time for the heck of it. I just have to decide on what is more important to me: the labor in disassembling the ion when I service it OR just getting some parts to make it easier.

Also, what is a reasonable price to put on the stock breech and barrel... $10 each?

Just as a loaner, to make maintenance easier? Bolt-out-back body. Done.

Selling the stock breech & barrel, try $5 each. Nobody really wants either unless they're doing a project.

Just relubed the orings on the bolt and regulator. Assembled the ion without the stock body kit.

Just saw the retaining clip on the back of the firing can and where the rear banjo is connected. I don't see how turning the rear portion will allow me to take it out. Don't I have to take out the rear frame screw and rear banjo first?

Bolt out back (bob) bodies don't use the donut. The rear frame screw and banjo screw into the actual bob body instead of the donut. I believe some bodies don't use the firing can or breech either. It's just one self contained chunk of metal.

Thank you. Was searching through the stickies but didn't see a link on how BOB bodies worked.

Another question....

Used a reg tester to adjust pressure on the CP reg before installing it on the ion. I set it at 180psi.

When I aired it up on the ion however, the gauge read around 120psi.

Do I just go by the gauge on the ion? I ask because I'm planning on taking out the gauge on the ion and using a plug for cosmetic reasons.

thanks

Just go by the gauge on the ion. You may have a different pressure readout if the hosing on your reg tester is a different diameter and also if the air supply is different. You can tune it so it is the air pressure you want then replace the gauge with a plug.

Before you put the plug in redo the whole process back out/in the air adjustment nut to stop flow. with the gauge still in turn it up over a crono so you see the operating pressure and memorize the number of turns need to bring the reg up to pressure after cleaning the reg with the plug installed

bump..

deadlywind negative body shell wbob

I also got my hands on an ion for an insanely cheap price a couple of months ago and like you got excited at the prospect of upgrading it..and it saves me the hassle of having to lend out my ego when i have newbie buddies going to the field with me..

i went with the deadlywind body, warrior internals, techt l7 bolt and disruptive pball barrel kit (cocker threaded)..

before and after post #375

its always going to be costly (and not even cost efficient) but then again the personal satisfaction you get is priceless..lol...

Just wondering, does anybody know if you can use the Deadly Wind HollowPoint bolt on any BOB body?

I wouldn't trust the stock gauge, the label inside it with the measurements has a habit of separating and rotating freely. For Ions, i only go by velocity, since pressure & velocity are directly correlated. Within legal velocity = safe pressure. Or, swap the gauge out with one that doesn't suck.

LOL... adobo. You're making me hungry

I am in the similar situation as you were. My current loaner is an RX which I am very picky in loaning out because of possible sale of it in the future.
This ion will make it easier for others to borrow... especially rentals at the field so they can feel an electro or friends that come out with me for some recball.

How's that L7 bolt? I've read a few posts it's one of the best. The superfly doesn't really compare but still improvement over stock.
I don't plan on getting a bolt now because of the cost but if all goes well with the ion and selling/trading items I am hoping to get a bolt in the future (just the tinkerer in me).

Just show a few paintballs this morning with the reg adjusted to 180psi from my reg tester (ashcroft gauge attached to an ASA). Was already shooting at around 250-250fps even though the ion gauge was showing 120psi. I'm thinking about going by the reg tester which I occasionally use anyway on my macdev markers.

My tester is similar to this:

the l7 feels softer to shoot and better for brittle paint..have not really done any efficiency tests yet...

suffice to say, it shot a whole lot better with the l7 that i am actually contemplating on running scrims with it..lol!

definitely worth the price IMHO!

Thanks for the advice guys!
Got the package today and both the shocktech body and warrior breech are defective

After about 3 hours of switching and figuring out where the leak was, found out it was the new parts that were the problem. Put back the stock parts and no leaks

I'm going to have to return these items back to ans.
Problem with the shocktech is that every time I install the back cap, it seems to take a chunk of the rear 015 oring by the swivel donut. Tried 3-4 times with new orings and it would take a piece of the orings causing a leak each time.
