Who actually has a clue what emo is?
Anyone?
It seems like everyone's way off when they list their favorite "emo" bands.

Emo is any type of music that evokes emotion. It is often mistaken for it's own genre.

Any type of music evokes emotion, but not all genres sing ABOUT emotion. You can listen to a dashboard confessional song and listen to him talk about how sad and depressed he is and how love hurts him and all kinds of pansy stuff.
Then you can listen to Maiden's "Hallowed be thy name" and it tells a story and isn't dedicated entirely to 5 minutes of soft "woe is me" type ****.

Well that's completely wrong.

That's definately wrong too.
Emo is short for emotional hardcore. It started back in the 80s with Moss Icon and Rites of Spring. Emo basically started with hardcore bands that wanted to try writing music as an emotional release and not just about political or social topics. Over the years emo has evolved some and incorporated more pop elements and cut back on the hardcore sound. However, there's still bands who keep the true spirit alive (City of Caterpillar, Yaphet Kotto, etc). Sadly, the term emo has been horribly disfigured by Mtv and the radio. Dashboard Confessional, Sunny Day Real Estate, Saves the Day, Thursday, etc. stray so far from the emo sound that there is no connection whatsoever.

i feel that emo is a sub genre of hardcore. but instead of consisting of a pure hard rock effect, a much more melodic style controls the music coming from both the instruments as well as the singing, while still maintaining hardcore influences. and though i do understand how emo has become a very large genre, combining the likes of indi type acts like death cab for cutie, with hardcore acts such as from autumn to ashes, i would go ahead and accept the fact that due to different reasonings, emo has just become a genre which has a very wide variety of sub-styles. in my opinion this could only make the genre more appealing to any true music fan.

Basically by some ya'll definitions, the early 90's alternative scene could be considered emo and in fact several genres of music predating it...

You speak for me oh speaker of all that is... thinking, or... something something... stuff
And Judo stfu. It's totally awesome when someone shows up to a forum and immediately starts speaking as though he's an authority on something but... actually nevermind, just leaving it at "stfu" works fine in this case.

I've actually only heard Thrice once when I saw them with Hot Water Music, I didn't think they were amazing, but they were okay.
Yeah, except that's a scaled down version of an essay my friend wrote. It's a pretty basic definition, that's like saying someone copied the bible because they said Jesus died on the cross.

I figured since this forum was for discussing music, making a thread about a genre of music wouldn't be completely obscene.

I've actually been posting here a month or so. And uh, who says I have to have posted on apaintball forum for a long time to know **** about music? I guess all lifes true lessons are learned on pb ****ing nation.
I just think it's great how if you don't like AFI and you actually have an opinion on music, you're an idiot.

omg that name should not even be in a thread like this. that band is holy. but yeah some of the definitions could label alot of other bands as emo.
some people might think i have a shallow taste in music. but i just hold bands to a high standard. and this emo and pop punk(and most punk) just doesnt cut it. its ok if people like that but ive got to a have a great vocalist and a jaw dropping guitarist. ive never heard of a punk band that has a guitarist who shreds in their songs but if someone can tell some that do ill check them out and tell you what i think.

I'm sure there's tons of reasons you're an idiot, nobody said anything about AFI.
As to your first comment, nobody says you have to have posted on a paintball forum for a long time to know anything about music. But to come into any environment where you are new and don't know anybody and immediately take this self superior attitude of "Uh no you're wrong. Listen carefully to me speak, for I am correct and so shall pass down these three statements" is jsut plain being a dick. Not all true life lessons are learned on pb-"quadruple-asterisk"-nation but one you'd do well to pick up on is not to come into a new environment and start with the attitude right away. That life lesson is free, most one's you come across aren't so cheap

Thrice - Under Par has a great guitar part. Theyre more hardcore than punk tho. AFI has a great guitarist.
