It's been a while since I've edited any video, but the last thing I did with a bunch of pictures was in premier pro cs4 (iirc) and there was a way to apply time and transitions to multiples at one time. I would guess Vegas could do it too. If not Microsoft had a sideshow progra, we used to use in high school, just import all your photos, choose duration and transitions and it would make an .avi. Can't remember the name of it though.

what camera/camcorder to get?

i already have a 40d (but need to keep it for personal use), but my father (whom i'm employed by) wants me to start a a video series for his church. he was thinking of getting a used canon gl2, but i suggested the canon 7d.

what are your thoughts? which one would provide better quality picture and better sound?

i'm also open to other companies products if you can suggest something that works. also, i'm considering having him get the 7d because whenever he goes on mission trips it could be advantageous to be able to take stills of where he is/what he is doing.

bleh, gl2.. why do people use mini dv anymore? everything is solid state now.

oh, the 40D shoots video. Link

edit: a t1i will serve his purpose wonderfully, i'd recommend a t1i over a gl2 anyday. and i've owned both.

If you're serious about video, go with a Panasonic Gh1 or Gh2. If you just want something that looks good out of the camera, go with the Canon t2i (t1i doesn't have manual video controls).

The GH1/GH2 could be easier to take for overseas pictures, since they're smaller cameras.

If you go with the GH1/2 I'd suggest getting the Panasonic 14-140 with it. That will cover pretty much everything you need.

Don't forget that you need an audio solution if you're going the DSLR route. I'd suggest the rode video mic or something from que audio.

Don't get a 7D. They're much to limited if you want to grow with them. Either get the Rebel, 60D, or 5D mkII (If you're going the Canon route).

the 40d shoots video? crazy

how is the 7d limited? i thought it was more expansive than the 60d?

double edit: the panasonic and lens would be way too much. he doesn't want to go over 1000.

Less than $800.

The 7D has AGC that can't be disabled. The other Canon cameras have manual audio. The 7D is the only one that doesn't have a Magic Lantern patch out. The 7D is exactly the same as the 60D in terms of video, so all the price difference is towards photo features. It makes the least sense to buy for primarily video work out of all Canon's line.

I love my GH2 for video. Canon definitely has it beat in the photo department, but the pictures out of it are acceptable. It's easily the best DSLR type body out for video right now. I'd choose it over the new 5d mkIII (judging by what I've seen so far).

I don't use the Panasonic lens though. I use old Canon FD mount lenses. They are manual aperture/focus. I've seen some nice stuff come from using the stock lenses though.

thanks for the response. when you say the photos are acceptable, what do you mean? are they noisy or do the colors not pop like the canon?

so what mounts work for the panasonic that i could look at?

this gh2 has me really intriqued

They can have some vertical striping. That's not to say that they aren't good. They can just be more picky. Make sure to shoot RAW.

That's a good example of what you could get out of it.

http://www.freddiemurphy.com/photos/

If you look at the bottom left headshot, I took that with a GH1.

You can use almost any mount with the GH cameras. It's just a matter of features. If you want auto-focus and electronic aperture control, get a Micro 4/3 mount. If you are ok with only manual controls, look at Canon FD or older Nikon lenses. Just make sure that the manual lenses have an aperture ring on them.

I can't speak for the flower ones, but the headshot came out of the camera almost like that. It's a matter of getting close to what you want in camera. Nice lenses help too haha.

I assume with the flower ones, the guy looked for good light.

No problem. Glad to help

What do you guys use for a rig if you are shooting with a dslr?

Just curious how you stabilize. Seems like there are a lot of techniques.

Gini makes some decent stuff for the price.

If you want something more expensive, you can check out Zacuto. They make quality stuff.

If you're looking for a stabilizer, I'd recommend Glidecam or Flycam. Glidecam is nice, flycam is affordable.

Alright, I've never shot video for paintball and i will begin to do so this year. I need new glass right now. I've got two options, 70-200 f/4 IS or 24-105 f/4 IS. Is the f/2.8 worth it? (It's all going to be outdoor footage).

Which would be ultimately more effective for shooting video on the field. Is the 24-105 going to be long enough?

Any other suggestions for new lenses?

Just filmed this last weekend.

Filmed on a GoPro Hero2, and the last bit on FinePix HS10, both 60fps, but thinking about getting either a Nikon or Canon. But that depends on which has more affordable glass and better video.

This was my final film for cinema production 1, last semester:

Shot with a 16mm bolex.

Also a quick timelapse test from spring break:

So, bringing this back, but I've got a bit of a problem.

I've just started using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5. I finished my first video with it, deinterlaced everything, rendered it, and exported it. But when I watch it back, everything plays fine except the clips that are sped up or slowed down. Those just look like the deinterlacing didn't work. Anyone know how to fix this? Never had this problem when I was using Elements.

don't waste your money on the 7d, get the 60d if you're staying cropped.

Hey guys, just picked up a 5D II, though I'm primarily using it as my new main still camera I'd like to do some BTS video of projects and photo shoots, could you guys recommend some equipment to help me with this? I'm thinking I'll need some wireless wearable mic packs but beyond that I'm not sure. My starter budget for video is about $500 since I'm not using it as a primary income source. I should also mention I do have Premier Pro CS5, is this what I should be using for video editing?
